College Admissions Essay: Becoming An Effective Leader
Twenty inches, eight pounds. The average length and weight of a healthy baby. I was born 8 pounds 4 ounces, 19.6 inches, a very healthy baby. Or so we thought. It wasn’t until some years later when we realized that I was cursed with possibly one of the greatest defects one could possess. I was shy. Being timid is a very major setback, not just in school but throughout life as well. Although I was more introverted than most children, I have overcome my insecurity, taken more leadership positions, and developed exceptional social skills. As a child it was no secret that I was one of the kids that had a hard time talking to other people, simply because of intimidation. As I have grown up I have had many opportunities to take new risks and step …show more content…
Some of my favorite involvements have been being the student council class representative, joining the business program, DECA through my marketing class, and being an active member in the National Honor Society. These have all helped me in a number of ways and these positions have been an essential key to me becoming an outgoing, hard-working, leader. The final and possibly most important key to me becoming a leader with a gallant personality is me developing my communication skills. The development of my communication skills is arguably the most important thing that I have done in high school. It all began in a communications class that I took during my sophomore year. Our first assignment was to give an informational speech on a topic of your choice. Despite the fact that I was apprehensive about giving my speech I did amazing and scored a ninety-nine percent. I believe that this speech is what began my fascination with communications, interaction with other people, and the business world. My junior was my first year in my marketing class. In marketing we take part in DECA competitions which is a business competition program. This is one of my favorite aspects of school simply because of the face to face interaction

At the most rudimentary level, a leader is someone who leads other. But what makes someone a leader? What is it about being a leader that some people understand and use to their advantage? What can you do to be a leader? A leader is a person who has a vision, a drive and a commitment to achieve that vision, and the skills to make it happen. These leadership traits are broken down further into seven beneficial habits in Sean Covey’s book “The 7 Habits of highly Effective Teens” and the fundamental base of leadership found in the 40 developmental assets. The main things that made Douglas a highly effective leader are family support, caring, integrity, school engagement, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win and synergize.…

I was part of the Future Leaders of York program in 2016. The program is for high school sophomores and juniors from York county. “FLY” taught me how to be a lifelong, responsible, and active leader in my hometown community. The program ran from September to May and included 6 day-long sessions, an opening retreat, and several special interest sessions. Throughout the year, I read from Leading with Character by John Sosik. Sosik explained that their are 6 types of effective leader characteristics: humanity, wisdom, transcendence, temperance, courage, and justice. Each session focused on these aspects of leadership. My experience was incredibly informative as it helped me grow personally and it prepared my for my future endeavors.…

My strongest leadership qualities include sympathy for others, perseverance, and motivation. When I see others in need of help, I am able to sympathize with them and I become motivated and driven to seek help for them. I persevere, and give my best effort until I feel I have done what I can. My leading by example inspires others to pitch in too, and together we can rise up to the cause. This can be seen in many famous instances of bravery and leadership, such as with Dian Fossey and her fight to end gorilla slaughter. These qualities are very important not only to be a good leader, but a good person as…

I am a leader. I have all the qualities that make a great leader, but I was not born this way.Experiences and how someone reacts to those experiences are what truly make a leader. One of the most influential experiences I have gone through is called the Lebanon High School Marching Band. I am certain that I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for marching band. Before coming to high school I already had leadership qualities, but band helped bring all those great qualities together and helped me get past my two major flaws: my lack of self-confidence and the fact that I was probably one of the shyest people you would EVER meet. When I joined marching band, I spent most of my waking hours sweating and suffering alongside wonderful people that I longed to…

Being a leader is more that motivating others to strive harder and accomplish goals. It’s more about gathering everyone with different skills, religion, ethnicity, etc. and making them one. As a leader, the task is to develop new strategies, tackle problems as soon as they start, recognize signs of stress, leave personal problems as home, put the job first, etc. Not everyone makes a great leader because time isn’t implemented to make changes that are necessary and don’t put the needs of the organization and members in thought. I will discuss who has been a great leader in my life any why. Along will that, I will discuss my traits as a leader.…

Pastor Dr. Stacy Spencer reminds us every class that “all of us have room and that’s room for improvement”. I believe this with everything in side of me which calls my attention to the five areas of Exemplary Leadership. Within those areas of leadership there is one area that I may focus on and pay close attention to as I am developed into a great leader. There are other areas that I have to improve in and continue to sharpen my tools, but this area requires the most attention. When it comes to the area of “Challenge the Process” this is my weakest area in the Exemplary Leadership Module. This area is the weakest because when operating in this area you have to make moves and take risk. I understand that God has not given us the spirit of fear…

What I realized about being a good leader from my peers through our discussions was that before being a good leader, you have to be a good person and have good character. Character and leadership are traits that are connected because if you don’t have good character, how can you expect people to follow your example? I also just wanted to add that unfortunately, S.A.L.T did not meet this year, and that is why I’ve only been active in this club for my sophomore…

I believe that I show leadership qualities by being an excellent academic student. I have worked hard to achieve my goals, which are to make good grades, rank in the top 10% of my class, and graduate with honors. I continue to push myself to excel, I have been on the AB Honor Roll since elementary school; and I am currently #8 in my graduation class. I know that I am capable of being a leader, I am trustworthy, dependable, disciplined and responsible. I expect more of myself than my teachers and parents do. I am a true friend, I do not tell my friends what they want to hear, I tell them the truth. I am not a follower, I am a leader and I plan to be a leader on into my college years.…

I am a great leader and throughout my high school career I have taken every opportunity I could to display this. For three out of my four years I have participated as a Muskoka Woods Leader. This required me to spend a week at a summer camp at which I would lead a group of grade 7s through a series of fun activities. Being a leader at this camp wasn't always fun and games though. I had encountered many situations with the grade 7s in which I would have to improvise and apply my knowledge of leadership to sort out. For example, during one of our games we would play, there was a little boy who was sitting off on the side not participating. I went over to talk to the boy to find out what was wrong. When I found out that he didn't understand how to play the game I knew exactly how to fix it. I brought him over to a corner and me and him played our own little one on one version of the game. I taught him how to play and I played with him until he was finally ready to join the other grade 7s. As well as being a Muskoka Leader, in my grade 11 year, I was a Link Leader for my high school. This was different from being a Muskoka Leader because this time I was working with grade 9 students who were entering high school. Throughout the year I worked with the grade 9s giving them secret tips and tricks about how they could survive their freshman year of high…

The leadership influences for me started on the first Monday morning quarters onboard the CGC Yocona. I was right out of recruit training, firing on all cylinders and ready to tow the Coast Guard line. Quarters was held on the mess deck and the young BM3 was handing out work lists for the day. I did not know who he was but I watched and listened to everyone call him by his first name. Once orders were given out to all parties he then asked if there were any questions. I was not introduced nor given a work party so I raised my hand to inquire where I was to go. I mistakenly asked him by his first name where I was to go. The morning turned from bright and casual to tense and stormy in an instant as he verbally tore into me as loud as possible. This degraded and embarrassed me which…
