When I visited my family in the Philippines, I grasped the struggle they face everyday. As a child, I remember sorting through piles of old toys being packaged away in a box to be sent to my cousins. Yet I could not wrap my head around it. Why couldn't my cousins buy their own toys? But while in the Philippines I grasped the reality, the impoverished area with extra tasks for comfortable living. While in NHS, I volunteered to make and bring food to the homeless. We made simple bags packed with lunches, to be given to them alongside a prepared dinner of chili. After preparing the bags, we went to a parking lot downtown while handing out the food. I witnessed the happiness brought to them because we offered them this food but also somebody to talk to. We talked with them and learned their stories, more on who they are and not their situation. It did not chastise them or degrade them, instead it showed our love and support. As I became more determined to help others, I began to volunteer at the local food pantry, while also getting a school club to become involved as well. While I volunteered, I helped provide food to those in need and also got to talk about their life. I met those with family at my school, those with 12 kids, and those who just came to the country.
