College Admissions Essay: My High School Career

Four years ago, I began my high school career not fully knowing who I was or what I wanted to become. Now, as a senior, I have discovered so much about myself through the clubs and activities which I am affiliated with. One of the touching moments in my time as a volunteer was when the BETA club helped to landscape the nursing home’s garden. The staff members and residents were so proud that the youth had come to beautify the area for them. I really started to understand that people feel better when they work for the greater good. Another life changing experience was getting to work with the Pre-Kindergarten students at Benton Elementary. At this point in my education, I had already been a member of the Future Teachers of America (FTA) club at my school for three years, but I still had my doubts about becoming a teacher.
Interacting with the students was enjoyable to me, and I knew then that my passion for education had blossomed. Thinking about it for a long time, I decided that my focus would be secondary education, because I believe that I could connect with the students on a deeper level. During my experience as a student, the teachers around me listened when I felt as if no one else in the world cared. To me, becoming a teacher means more than teaching a curriculum. It means being there for the students. It means teaching standards, but remembering that they need a lesson about life also. All these reasons and more are why my career goal after high school is to receive a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Tennessee Wesleyan in the field of Biology. My school activities include being president of the FTA chapter and a member of the following: National Honors Society, BETA club, and Drama club.
