Community Colleges Should Not Be Free Essay
When someone says free, nobody assumes money. People consider America, or the right to speak freely without worry, not free college. To brand something that costs so much now as free would be quite a large task. “That’s why I am sending this Congress a bold new plan to lower the cost of community college – to zero”, former President Barrack Obama stated in his speech on free tuition. He states that college can cost nothing to anyone, but free will never be free. Credit is not given, only earned. Increasing the already insatiable amount of taxes that American citizens pay for is just the beginning. Lowering the quality of education received when there are thousands of new students going to institutions just for the reason that it is free. Higher education will be suffering in numerous ways, including: increased quantity of students, reduced salary once a degree is attained, not to mention a higher percentage of scholars dropping out. The first two years of college should not be “free.”
First, there would be several more students attending community colleges

That is the percent of people that will enjoy paying more money on taxes. In addition, it would not be fair to start charging money to people that have already graduated. They have student loans or already paid for education costs, higher taxes to pay for other students that will not have any student loans would not be acceptable. If there was a machine that printed money, but did not de-value that money at the same time, then free tuition would be possible. Until that day comes, it will not happen without someone having to pay for it. America’s economy is not about free labor or ‘handouts’, resembling masses of people that assume so for a reason unknown. American citizens have an opportunity to pay for school, which is not always possible in other countries. There are enough people asking what America can do for them, yet few asking what they can do for

In Andrew Kelly’s “The Cost of ‘Free’ College” he proposes why free college will not only lower standards and competition among colleges, but will weaken the university's stance on policy and redirect tuition expenses to taxpayers (39). Kelly explains the low price of college will only mean decreased quality of learning and regulated spending (39). A move of tuition to taxpayers will end in decreased significance in students, faculty and staff, and facilities (Kelly 39). Without rivalry from other schools, free institutions will falter and lose their credibility (Kelly 39). Kelly also believes that “free college would entail an unprecedented expansion of federal power over public colleges” (39).…

Many are against the idea of not charging for community college because they believe that not charging for community college will bring more debt to America. Andre Kelly, the director of the Center on Higher Education Reform at the American Enterprise Institute, describes why he believes that having free community college tuition is not the way to go. He states that community college is already practically free and that’s there’s no need to have this type of promise. That its incredibly naive for anyone to think that college graduate percentage would increase just because community college now has the label as…

The federal government already loses over $77 billion a year on educational grants and tax breaks, meanwhile students pay about $60 billion a year to attend public colleges and universities. By the federal government simply footing the bill instead of laundering money, public two and four year institutions could be free. This plan means cutting off aid to private institutions, but they can be left to their own endowments. This revolutionary change would mean no more confusing financial aid systems and no more crushing student loans. It is in the country’s best interest to have young adults who are educated, socially mobile, and not saddled with mountains of…

If one looks at the data, the bigger problem is that many students don’t finish college. “Only about 55 percent of students graduate six years after starting,” Bob Luebke (a writer for the Civitas Institute.) The problem is not access but completion. So why do people drop out of college? For the most part, money is not the biggest problem; it’s usually factors like family issues, or transportation. Providing free tuition to institutions that graduate only a small amount over 50 percent of their students does not make economic sense. Also, if college tuition does become free for students, colleges will attract more young people who are not suited for college and will most likely drop out as well as more students that will major in fields with little or no market…

Obama has proposed the idea of having community college be free in order to increase the number of people to own a degree. Joanne Jacobs writes in her article about free community college that “The White House estimates that this would cost $60 billion for over 10 years” to execute. With our economy in shambles at the moment, this can worsen the economic status of the country, adding to the drastic debt that continuously rises on a daily basis. If Obama creates some sort of promise about tuition being free, then another issue could arise, which is having schools become more crowded than what they already are. States need to spend more money in order to increase the…

Recently, it was announced that the President is trying to make community college free for all. Most of my friends will be going to community college next year. Some are going there because it was the only option for them to further their education, others because they did not have enough financial help to go to a four-year college. So wouldn’t a free community college have a good impact on them? Supporters of this idea say that it can persuade more people to go to college and get more financial diversity into the community colleges. What they don’t see is the horrible repercussions that those effects will have in the education system that can easily deter people from getting a good education and will instead have hopeful low-income students get a mediocre education.…

For people to understand the intrigue of free college the first step is to look at student debt. The mass amounts of student debt started the conversation of free tuition in four-year colleges and universities. The reality is that student debt has overwhelmed many Americans and will sink the economy again. The 2000s dot COM crash and the housing market crash is evidence of what is to come. Companies like Navient formerly know as Sallie Mae, have increased the intrinsic value of stocks. Which increases the price at which they are sold and traded. Once the market is flooded, the peak point of these stock prices will be followed by an immediate deflation and a crash in the market. The bubble will pop and America’s stock market will have to reset itself. Many economists can recognize this recurring pattern. The issue is the government’s bleeding heart. The White House…
