Today human beings are living in a diverse culture and economy. The economy is getting globalised day by day. So the understanding of the different culture is now becoming the necessity for many aspects like work, business and personal life. Body language has now become an important part of the culture. Body language is the communication through non-verbal channel. Body language is basically the use of body parts to send the message. In different parts of world the message is communicated through our body language is different. People with background like business, politics, education, and media have realised the importance of body language and they are nowadays prefer to have training in that before serving overseas.
Cultural differences in body language can be seen in many areas like gender differences, personal space etc. So it is important for people nowadays to pay attention on your body language when you are moving to some other country.
The kind of actions that we can do with eyes, hands, face and head like handshakes, hug,nodding head , facial expressions, using arms freely, kissing and sitting cross-legged etc. depicts different meaning in different countries. We should know how to behave in different countries because if we do not the language of the country we are visiting then only our body language could help us in that case.
For e.g. head signifies agreement and approval in western countries but in many you cannot touch other people heads as their culture doesn’t allow this. In a same way in many countries eye contact is praised while in many it is treated as disrespect. Both right and left hand has equally role to play in western countries but in eastern countries left hand is considered as dirty. Even a ‘thumbs up’ sign or raised fingers in form of ‘V’ can put you in trouble some of the countries.
