What Is The Claim That Seal Hunting Is Inhumane
Killaq Enuaraq-Strauss is constantly using body language throughout her video response to Ellen DeGeneres’s statement that seal hunting is cruel and inhumane. Enuaraq-Strauss uses her hands, eyes, mouth, and head to communicate with those who are watching her video.
Body language is the movement or position of the body that express a person’s thoughts or feelings. Hand gestures can be extremely contradictory depending on the mood of the speaker, or how they portray themselves. Enuaraq-Strauss’s consistent use of animated hand gestures throughout the entire video demonstrates her passion towards the topic of the benefits of seal hunting and emphasized the points she was making in the video; however, her tendency to over-gesture can make her seem erratic, less believable, and less powerful. Multiple times she has her palms facing out which has many different meanings like she exhibits confidence or trustworthiness, but on the other hand, her open palms may indicate a lack of something that she needs or is requesting, such as acceptance from others of seal hunting in Iqaluit. Additionally, many times throughout the video Enuaraq-Strauss lays both of her hands against her chest, which conveys her desire to be believed or accepted and assures that what she says comes from the heart. At one point during the video she points to the air while stating a fact about a lack of food in the north, the finger pointing adds emphasis to her fact. The majority of people are born with the ability to “read” other people’s eyes, which is pretty crucial in order to interact among society. Enuaraq-Strauss is constantly glancing between the computer and to something off screen, normally to her left, which could have several meanings such as, she could be shy or uncomfortable, or she could be curious about her surroundings. Furthermore, when people glance to their left it could signify that they are recalling or remembering facts or a sound from memory. In addition, throughout Enuaraq-Strauss’s video response to Ellen DeGeneres’s opinion on seal hunting, she raises her eyebrows numerous times, which is a common signal of greeting and acknowledgement or a reaction of fear and surprise, in which case the eyebrows are raised for a longer period of time. Raising of the eyebrows asks for attention from and can signal general emphasis; alternatively, it may be a sign of submission or indicate openness, as it lets others see your eyes.
