The lyrics also explain how people are aware of it, but don’t do anything. We may not know it, but there could be abuse even right next door! It’s just a matter of being able to listen well and to be able to trust your “gut”. Ms. McBride is only trying to raise awareness that there is child abuse in this not so perfect world. Yes, there are other horrible things going out with the world, but this is one of the many things that are going on. There is a part in the song that says; “The teacher wanders but she doesn’t ask” as well as “The neighbors hear but they turn out the light”, meaning they hear/know there is abuse in the home, but they just turn away. I believe it is for all to be able to hear and understand. This message can be meant for parents, grandparents, neighbors, friends, aunts, and uncles, just anyone that may have a loved on that happens to be a child or know a child.

The author, Ms. McBride, is building credibility by showing the little girl from the beginning of the video until the end. When she is focusing the story on her, it makes us understand what the video is all about. It’s sad because in the beginning it talks about how this young girl has packed her own lunch and is wearing clothes from the day before. At the end, it shows the little girl finally achieving her dreams and I quote “But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she’d loved”.
