In this essay I will be reviewing two versions of the famous play 'Twelfth Night' and comparing the differences and similarities of them. Originally, it was written by William Shakespeare in around 1601-2 but a more recent version of this play was turned into a movie, directed and written by Trevor Nunn these are the two versions that will be reviewed.
Many aspects from the original are kept the same in Trevor Nunn's film however there are some differences. For example, Shakespeare began his play on the island Illyria at Duke Orsino's Palace where he expresses his love for Olivia, these two characters are very important in the script. Where as Trevor Nunn starts his scene on a boat full of passengers including Viola and her brother who get separated during the shipwreck at sea. Viola ends up being washed up on the island of Illyria. These two scenes are set very differently, Shakespeare probably decided to start with this scene because it introduces Duke Orsino who plays a critical role in the play, it shows us his personality and the relationship between him and Olivia. On the other hand, Trevor Nunn choose to begin with the shipwreck because there's more action going on and it builds tension so its more interesting, hooking and dramatic to watch, it also shows us the relationship between Viola and her brother and the separation between them, this explains why he wasn't in the rest of the film.
The similarities between the two would be the style of speech they use, Trevor Nunn keeps it the same as Shakespeare's script and doesn't change it. For example, In the opening of the play stage directions say 'musicians attending' obviously this means there is music playing while Duke Orsino expresses his love for Olivia in iambic pentameter or blank verse such as 'if music be the food of love play on...'. This technique is when an unstressed syllable is followed by a stressed syllable. In the film, Orsino is
