Cultural Diversity
Cultural diversity is a shared way of life of a number of people who have common knowledge of values, morals, beliefs or behaviors. In culture knowledge can be derived from experiences, attitudes, religion, different roles or skills. In cultural diversity there is a sense of behavior that has been learned from experiences or patterns passed through communication from one generation to the next. Sub-Culture is group within or smaller than a cultural group which has people of different ethnic background, place of residence, religion, or other possible factors that can bring the group together.
Ethnicity plays a large role in today’s society. Ethnicity, or ethnic identity, refers to membership in a particular cultural group. It is defined by shared cultural practices, such as holidays, language, and customs. People can share the same nationality but have different ethnic groups. For example, citizens of the United States are of many different ethnic backgrounds. Ethnicity should not play a role in whether a person should be hired according to the equal employment opportunity commission. A person cannot be discriminated against due to their race, ethnicity or origin. Ethnic groups may be either a minority or a majority in a population. Whether a group is a minority or a majority also is not an absolute fact but depends on the perspective. For instance, in some towns along the southern border of the U.S. people of Mexican ancestry are the overwhelming majority population and control most of the important social and political institutions but are still defined by state and national governments as a minority (O’Neil, 2007).
Cultural diversity is a referral to human qualities which are different from our own and those of groups that one may belong; but that are distinct in other individuals and groups. Diversity has many dimensions including but not limited to: age, ethnicity, gender and personality traits. Even though society has made tremendous lead way in embracing diversity there are still barriers to overcome. Different types of cultural diversity can generate a sort of conflict, which can affect how people interact with one another. On another note, demographic diversity can sometimes contribute to interpersonal conflict. If people think he or she has a different opinion than another person or he or she does not like what a person is doing or how he or she does it one can destroy cultural group. (Gender Discrimination, 1995-1999).
A person and his or her personality can make communication and coordination of an activity or activities more difficult at times, but cultural diversity has advantages. Cultural diverse groups in an organization that give extra effort to understand and accept one another’s personalities tend to produce a higher quality of decisions than groups that are either consistent or do not manage one’s diversity well. Personality can be defined as enduring patterns in a person 's thoughts, feelings and behaviors throughout situations. Personality traits are behavioral predispositions. Personalities can affect how one reacts to various situations and interacts with other people, so personality traits are not rules for predicting behaviors but are behavioral tendencies. To appreciate personality diversity is respecting strengths and limitations of an individual and knowing how to profit on an individual 's strengths. Personality is the opposite of expecting one to view a situation the way one does no matter how successful one has been using his or her approach. (Wright State University 2007)
Cultural diversity is the life of people who share values, morals, belief or behaviors. Culture comes from different experiences, attitudes, religion, different roles or skills. Cultural diversity is a mixture of behaviors that are learned from different experiences or are passed through communication from one generation to the next. Sub-Culture are groups within a smaller cultural group with people of different ethnic background, residency, religious beliefs, or any other factor that bring people together.
