Dance Performance Construct By Tanja Liedtke
The dance performance I chose to review was a recording of the performance Construct by Australian choreographer and dancer Tanja Liedtke. Construct was performed on April 2nd, 2009 in Seattle, Washington. The type of dance performed in Construct was contemporary modern. Though there were no actual stopping points, or named dances in this performance they did however have different sections of different dances with unique styles and props. The three sections I am going to write about really caught my attention and stood out to me because of how unique they were; I have never seen any dance performed in those particular ways. The same three people danced throughout the entire performance, in some sections all three danced and in other sections …show more content…

He picks up a drill and begins to dance with it, as he moves the drill he moves his body to follow the direction of the drill. When I watched this, it reminded me of the robot dance. He is very sharp and on point in his movements while following the path he is creating with the drill. After having it for a few minutes his dance starts to become more loose and free. I believe the drill makes the man believe he has some type of power now, he then runs over to the women and picks one up off of the ground. As he picks her up he point the drill towards her and starts moving around almost as if he is drilling her. The movements he makes using it, she follows as if he controlling all the movements she is making. The dance moves are very impressive, how she moves as one with the drill is very unique. There is a special type of rhythm in this dance, though they are doing different things they were very similar in the how they moved their bodies to go along with the path the drill made. He then moves to the other woman, and she follows the movements of the drill just like the others. It then switches from a more serious note to a humorous one. The guy starts making quicker more rapid movements causing the girl to make the same type of movements, she also does some gymnastic types of moves. Personally, I think the way they look while doing this is funny and I believe Tanja …show more content…

They are using these pieces to act out different things, for instance the man and woman hold the pieces while the other woman acts like she is walking up stairs. Another example of what they are doing is, the two woman are holding the pieces up making the shape of a house but then run over to the man and hold the pieces above him like a house while he acts like a dog. All three of them are running around moving very fast, grabbing different pieces and acting out different scenarios. The music is also very fast and has a constant beat to it that they somewhat dance along with. The mood then changes completely from joyful to horrific. This happens because the man picks up a piece and acts like he is hitting one woman with it, she falls like she has died and the other woman makes a cross with the pieces and covers her body. Then the other woman picks up a piece acts like it is a gun and pretends to shoot and kill the man, he then falls also making a cross with the pieces. The woman then proceeds to pretend to kill herself and fall to the ground and also makes a cross. After that the mood switches to a more humorous mood because the first girl that pretended to die jumps up, when she sees the other two pretending to be dead she quickly lays back down. This section was very odd to me, it switched from one thing to the other very fast, but the dancers all put so much expression into their

The six female dancers sit on the ground separately, spread out in three different columns, and begin to feel their bodies gently as they clasp their hands on their chest, neck, and back. They warmly embrace their individual bodies as if assuring themselves that they have beautiful womanly bodies. Next, the six female dancers twist their bodies quickly to the side and stand on their feet as they raise their upper bodies to a straight position followed by their extended arms slowly rising above their heads. The effect of the women being naked with their limbs spread apart widely dramatically helps the audience understand the true beauty of the female body. The female dancers proceed to rub their breasts with both hands as they glide their fingertips and arms across the top and bottom of their breasts in opposite directions. The lighting of the set is focused on the frontal side of all the female dancers in an effort to focus the audiences eyes on the women's bodies. The technique of a stagnant body position, as the dancers are nude, allows the audience to focus on the upper bodies of the female dancers which helps to express and celebrate the true beauty and elegance of the female…

A brief moment is seen in the first subsection – where the dancers break away from the tight formation and precise synchronisation and go into spontaneous looking duets and solos In the mean time the previously religious lyrics change to “there is trouble all over this world...”. As the lyrics return to “I’ve been buked” a strong sense of community is…

I also noticed there were a lot of lifts and pointed toes when the male dancer carried and lifted his partner. Then another portion of the dance occurred after the previous dancer took their bows and the certain closed. The curtains then lifted and the lights turned on and the background turned into different colors. Then the dancers started appearing on stage and there was an abundance of dancers. The females in the performance were wearing different colors and so were the male dancers.…

The dance consisted of: “(1) the medicine man, who sits by a fire in front of the line of dancers and burns angelica root to the accompaniment of incantations; (2) the singer, kdta"an, who leads the song from the center of the line of dancers; (3) two side singers, who accompany the leader in the chorus; (4) the four or more side dancers, ya'd,'lyeortakttdjidi'lyE, who carry the beat by rhythmic stamping; and (5) the four flint carriers, hodje'wana'wai, who do a special dance in front of the line” (Goldschmidt et al., 108). The selected dancers who are outfitted by the designated leaders are then “line up before the medicine man in the order in which the leaders want them, and they receive their deerskins and the final touches to their costumes” (Goldschmidt et al., 108). They then enter the ceremonial dancing ground, lead by the medicine man and take up their selected…

Modern dance is the term used for the 20th-century theatrical dance movement. The movement was started by American dancer Isadora Duncan in a rebellion against ballet, which she felt was too constricting. Duncan based her dance technique and style on the Greeks. She identified with their ideals of human form and beauty. Although her way of dance was originally met with strong opposition, her ideas later came into wide favor.…

The dance started off with a lone girl on the stage. She started on stage alone because it signified how she is the main character of the story. That shows that she is trying to repress all the bad things that happened in her past. Throughout the whole dance there was always the six other girls that would come out at random times. With everyone else coming and going on stage that signifies that we are there and apart of her but we are not real. That made it seem that they wanted to reassure to the one lone dancer that she isn’t always alone. That showed her fighting off her memories of the past and the memories trying to become apart of her. At the end she finally gets the courage to get rid of the memories and start a brand new chapter in her life.…
