Defining Moment: A Short Story
Fidgeting in my chair, every minute felt like an hour. We just wanted to see him. The nurses keep coming back saying, “I don’t know what is taking so long”.
My mom is now pacing. My aunt walks over to her and my mom starts to cry. My sister comes to sit by me and starts a new game of tic-tac-toe with me, the hundredth game for the day, or so it felt.
People come and go and finally we hear “Griffioen”. My mom grabs me and my sister and takes us over to the conference room. Inside the room stands the doctor. This is our first time meeting him so we shake hands and introduce ourselves. He tells us that they took ten inches of my dad’s colon, but he believes he caught the cancer in time, that he would let us know in a few days. My dad was headed to recovery so back to the hard, lumpy chairs we went.

When he get to his bed side he is asleep so my mom wakes him up and he tells us hi and asks me and Megan how we were doing. My mom gives him a kiss on the forehead and tells him that he’s a fighter and that they got all the cancer. My dad fell back to sleep so we found a nurse and she told us he would be going to ICU for the night. We go back to him and tell him we would see him in a little bit.
We head back down the elevator and gather up all our coats, iPads, phones, and bags. We head to the car so we can park closer to the hospital. When we arrive at the ICU we are told we beat him there. We watch all the new patients coming in for the night hoping to see him. My mom picks a chair and puts her stuff in it as she knew she would be staying the night.
Finally, a nurse comes to get us. My dad is a slightly more awake and tells me to have a good day at school tomorrow and that he loves me. He then waved goodbye as me and my sister walked out the door with our aunt, as she had to take us

I feel like I’m in an episode of ER or Grey's Anatomy without the pretty people. There were rows and rows of people on gurneys in the hallways. Waiting for a room? Is Michelle going to be one of them? Then there were cops everywhere and they were taking reports and I looked in one room and a woman’s face was completely bloody. And then I heard the word attacked and realized this must be the norm here. Well I guess Michelle was lucky because we got right in a room. So now Michelle is still really, really out of it and they hook her up to oxygen and try to get her hydrated. In the course of being there we saw about six different nurses and two different doctors. She had a chest x-ray, EKG and blood work done and little by little her blood pressure started coming back to normal. All I wanted was to take her home. I hated to leave the room to find a bathroom because I was afraid of what I was going to see out there. You see I can't watch TV medical shows because I faint at the sight of blood. I kept my head down and found a bathroom without getting lost. Finally 14 hours later at 10:30 p.m. we got to go…

He hugged me tight and told me repeatedly, “It’s going to be ok baby! Be strong! I love you so much!” The doctor grabs a scalpel and forceps and the pain consumes me. I let out shrilling cry and then my body collapses as the pain diminishes from what would be a ten on the pain scale, to a four or five. Then we heard the baby scream as the doctor placed him on my chest. Overwhelmed with joy, we began to sob.…

It was 2009 and I had been in sixth grade for a couple of months. I was on the phone with one of my friends from school when my mom called through my door for me to come out into the living room. I ignored her and kept talking for a few minutes when she called me out again. I rolled my eyes and told my friend I would call her right back. I walked into the living room and it seemed odd to me that both my sisters and dad were all out there too. I watched my mom take a deep breath with my dad by her side. As she began to speak her voice shook and gloss covered her eyes. “The doctors found a lump in my last mammogram.” she said. “It came back as cancer. I’m going to have to get treatment but I’m going to be okay.” No one else said a word, we all…

When she pulled the sheet back, I did not get to see his face. I had not seen his face since I said goodbye to him in the morning when he drove me to school. My dad identified him quickly with the choked response, “Yes, that’s Kyle,” and they placed the sheet back over his head and pronounced him dead. He then was placed in a body bag and taken in a hearse away from the school. I wished that was the end of it, but unfortunately, it was only the beginning.…

We were so happy, I started explaining to her where we were, how the place looked like and that there was a big garbage can, as I explain tears dripped from my eyes. We hugged each other, cried, and stayed put right next to the garbage can. We finally saw my mother’s silver BMW car. We slowly walked towards the car, making sure that it was my mother or one of our parents are in there. I then saw my mother did something with her hand, I know what that meant to hurry up, I told my little cousins to hurry up and get in the car, we ran as fast as we could towards the car and got in.
