Dentistry Personal Statement
As a young child, I had multiple tooth extractions due to tooth decay. Although this was unpleasant, it has inspired me to become a dentist because I want to educate others about good oral health to prevent them from experiencing similar problems. Through having orthodontic braces, I have witnessed the impact that dentistry has on our lives. This is because braces helped to improve the appearance of my teeth but also to build my confidence. I believe that my past dental experience is valuable because it will enable me to empathise with patients and to reassure them that they are not alone.
To ensure that dentistry is the right career for me, I have attended open days, spoken to dental students and I have completed a dentistry-related online course. I discovered the benefits of this career such as the opportunity to manage your own practice, however, I was also made aware that dentistry is physically demanding and can be stressful. I would usually deal with stress in my

Through observing the dentists carrying out fillings, tooth extractions and root canals, I have realised the importance of having good manual dexterity. I have been doing art and crafts, such as knitting, which has improved my manual dexterity. I also noticed that the dental team worked together. This has made me appreciate each member of the dental team and has brought me to understand that without this teamwork, the dentists would struggle to carry out their role. Through participating in my school's sports team for netball, I believe that I was able to learn valuable skills such as teamwork and leadership which would help to strengthen my role as a dentist. I did a first aid certificate course at school and this has reinforced my interest of choosing a career where I could be providing care to patients on a daily

In the 2004 release, by Touchstone Pictures, "The Alamo" takes a famous story told throughout time and recreates it on the screen once again. This time was it really any better than the other releases? Maybe the flashy effects and better film quality could interest you in this movie but the real question is how valid is it. To the average person this story looks as if they have recreated it perfectly, but to a historian it might not look so genuine. Although this movie does depict many things with absolute efficiency some things are left out. Almost completely ignored in this movie are important instances in history such as the cowardly James Fannin and the battle at Goliad. This is an important part of the story that has been left out. It could have been nice to know what happened to the one person who could have helped but refused to due to his own growing situation. Also in the movie James Bowie is portrayed as a mildly sick person whereas in real life he deathly ill. He was known to have typhoid fever and a bad case at that. Beyond the fallacies in this movie there were many great things that were put to the screen. One of the best in my opinion is the removal of the "line" that was drawn in the dirt by Travis. According to much research the line was actually a story drawn up years later to help signify the sacrifices these men had made. They correctly portrayed how the men were outnumbered in this fight and the effort and courage that was put forth in this battle to defend the Alamo. The last and most controversial issue in the movie is how did David Crockett really die? In this movie they give him the courageous death that he was thought to have. Again researching this subject I found that many believe that Crockett surrendered and was later tortured and assassinated with a few other men. Whether this is what happened or not this was a movie that for the most part had everything right. It was a pretty good…

However, if you are really motivated to help people, the job will become bearable during the most stressful times. According to Herman Lee DDS, a general dentist with his own practice, dentistry is stressful because most patients are afraid of dentists. However, if you love what you do, you will be able to survive in this demanding profession. In his private practice, he receives around seven to nine patients daily. He also plays the piano and puts on classical music as the background music when working. Mekar Honda DDS works in a West Coast Dental corporation and sees around 30 patients daily. She also has graduated dental students who work under her to gain experience. A lot of the graduates do not know a lot of things since each patient is different and not all of their conditions can be compared to the ones in the book. The book is limited and therefore during dental school students should join programs where they volunteer in third world countries to gain hands on experience (Honda). It is harder for her because she works for a corporation and has a schedule to follow. Mekar Honda DDS works from 9:00-6:00pm five days…
