A few goals that I would have for my team in the beginning of the season would be to get an at large bid into the NCAA tournament and also contend to win the conference tournament each year.
For my individual athletes I would sit down with them in the beginning of the year and set up plans so that they can achieve the goals that they have for themselves. Another goal I would have for my team is that I would help my players grow into being great men by teaching them discipline and the meaning of hard work. By doing this I will be able to reach my players on a different level rather then just coach. I would be able to be in some ways a “father” figure to them if they needed it. By being a father figure to my players I would be able to preach that winning isn’t everything in life that sometimes your going to go through hardships and its not always going to go your
way.
While I would like to be an extremely competitive coach and what coach goes out to lose games? But at the end of the day winning isn’t everything and sometimes your going to face an opponent that is better than you. As a coach you need to assess your team each time you lose and figure out what you can do better in the up coming week of practice. Depending on how my players played in the game would gage how I react to the ending talk after the game. If I knew that my players gave everything that they had I would let them know that I was proud of the fight and character that they displayed throughout the game. On the other hand if I knew that they could have played better and didn’t give everything they had I would lay into them a little bit more. As a coach I would want to get everything I possibly could of them. Many times coaches resort to running their players into the ground after a loss, which at times is a good idea. In order to do that you need to understand what types of players you have on your team. Each team is always going to have the standout player or players that can take games over with the talent they have. Sometimes it gets to there head a little too much.
Being able to manage your players is a huge part of sports. Your going to have players that don’t necessarily have the skill that other players do. In the meetings that I would hold in the beginning of the year I would be able to see what the less skilled players wanted to work on and I would make sure if not me, then my staff would do extra work with them to help them become better and be able to get more time on the field. Most teams have the player that thinks he is above the team and better than everyone else. Some ways that I would deal with that depending on how they act in practice and after losses would differ. If this is something that I noticed that didn’t seem to change after a few incidents I would ask that player to leave the team, no matter how much they impacted the team. Having “cancers” on the team is not good, all that it does is bring the morale of the team down.
