There is oftentimes stigmas around not having everything put together as well as mental health issues. I also believe there is this pressure because it's become so hard to get into things like college or to get a good job afterwards. For students like Vanessa there is pressure that she puts on herself to not fail her dream like she saw her mother do. I believe the greatest pressure she may have felt could have come from herself, because she had everything so mapped out, and thought if even one thing had stepped out of line her whole plan would have fallen apart. Vanessa has not been properly prepared for college in the sense that she did not realized quite how hard college would be for her. As well she was not prepared for the fact that everything would not be as easy and she would experience failure for the first time. If she went to a high school that did not encourage secondary education she probably was never exposed to anyone to tell her this. This left opportunity for huge disappointment when she did not do as well as expected. Being a first generation college student probably had effect on this also because she had no one to talk to and her family that has gone through college before.
