Educational Counseling Purpose Statement
I’m writing this purpose statement in regards to my application to the educational counseling program here at Cal State Bakersfield, where my hope is that I will be able to obtain a masters degree. I’m actually still currently attending Cal State Bakersfield, as an undergraduate student, where I’m finishing up the last few classes I need to attain my bachelor’s degree in sociology. I knew when I transferred to this university two years ago to work on my undergraduate study that just obtaining my bachelors degree wasn’t gong to be enough for the career path that I have chosen. Therefore, my plan was always going to have to include graduate school. I couldn’t think of a more suitable program than the one that is offered at this fine establishment. …show more content…
Likewise, I have continuously had a real passion and interest in serving others, which is why I spend a lot of my time serving in the community. I used to think that I wanted to focus on working with the youth, but being on the college campus for as long as I have helped me to realize made that I would much rather use my own experiences to help influence those within the college setting. In fact, I had an opportunity to work at a non-profit organization, where I was helping to mentor women and equipping them with the necessary tools and skills to obtain work. This experience helped to validate my desire to enter into a career that would allow me to help others accomplish and reach their goals as well. Therefore, I feel like the Masters of Science Degree in Counseling with an emphasis in Student Affairs, is a perfect place to start my next educational journey. Furthermore, I feel like this program will help prepare me to work as a professional within a student service sector …show more content…
Through the applied internship in sociology course offered here on campus, I was able to complete an internship as a personal career coach and stylist at the well-known non-profit organization “Dress for Success”. Through this experience, I was able to put to practice all that I had been learning within the classroom setting. Furthermore, my internship experience also allowed me to gain one on one experience with individuals from different walks of life, while practicing the important skills needed for my career choice. On top of that, I was also given an opportunity to become a teacher’s assistant for one of the faculty members here on campus. This opportunity allowed me to work on a more personal level with the faculty, and get a sense of what goes on behind scenes while also utilizing my own personal skills. It’s important to note that not all students qualify to become a teachers assistant, a student must have taken and passed the course prior to assisting and must have an outstanding GPA. Lastly, I spend a significant amount of time volunteering out in the community of Bakersfield. Volunteering my time is something that is very important to me and something I take very seriously. I feel so fortunate and humble for all that I have, so I take pride in giving back to those who are less fortunate that I. In fact, I’m

In considering which path to take in graduate school, I immediately had a flashback to when I would travel with my mother and care for my younger siblings while she worked as a counselor to provide assistance with psychosocial support and mental health care to communities, families and individuals in conflict and post-conflict situations. Having the opportunity to observe her and the organization change so many people’s lives while providing them with hope, planted the seed of nurturing and counseling in my heart. Since middle school I have devoted my time to taking on every opportunity that comes my way to volunteer with helping my community better the lives of our youths.…

As a first-generation student, I am significantly influenced by the Student Affairs staff at my undergraduate institution. When I arrived at Ramapo College, I quickly realized I was not prepared for college-level work, if it were not for the Educational Opportunity Fund Program, I would have felt lost and would have struggled both academically and financially. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have had many Student Affairs professionals guide me to academic success and personal development. As a result, I made the conscious effort to work with the minority students on campus and accepted the position as a Resident Program Assistant for the EOF program. I worked with a diverse population of students where the majority came from low-income communities who had the potential to perform college level coursework. While…

Throughout, my high school years many teachers, family members, and friends have struggled to push the students to do more within their school. Many said that they wanted to leave behind a story, still several students never fully understood the teacher's reasons. However, after properly maturing and developing while in school, I have learned the importance of making a ‘legacy’ for yourself. Every so often I wondered what was the point of attending a place for a reasonable amount of time and not making memories. For this reason, if I was allowed to be a part of Howard’s student body I would acknowledge the hardship and struggle of many that weren't allowed to attend college; by doing this my action would, hopefully, reflect on other individuals, while giving many the inspiration to make a…

My educational career from my freshman year at Saint Louis University High School although with some difficulties has in my opinion been a great success when I look back on it. In my freshman year, I was really challenged academically by my classes but managed to push on with the help of my teachers and friends who knew I could succeed if given some help. My sophomore year was a bit easier now that I had adjusted to the normal homework, I still had a tough time but found a love for my history and English classes, I also found myself becoming more sociable compared to my grade school years. My junior year was likely my hardest year but I believe I learned the most about what I wanted to do in regards to a college degree in my Psychology class.…

One goes to college, usually around the age of eighteen, and by the time they leave they are expected to have decided on the career that they will have for the rest of their lives. Being a psychology and interpersonal communication major, I have always had an interest on relationships between individuals given certain stimuli presented to them. I figured out what I want to do with my education which took more than four years to figure out because high school was a time where you can try any art, sport, STEM, and career academic courses without having to pay for it so I wanted to get to know how each course went to find the one I found that fit me and I took this class called Media Literature where we got to figure how certain were portrayed on TV shows, movies and advertisement. The class made me realize that if I could work in the communication branch that I could control a lot of the portrayal on TV, news and social networking.
