Characteristics of Expository Essays
What characteristics make these essays expository? The characteristics that make these essays expository at that they were meant to explain a topic. They are unbiased and show evidence/facts about the topic of the paper.

In what ways are expository essays similar to business communication? In what ways are they different? Expository essays are very alike to business communication because they both use facts to clarify and inform a specific subject. They are different because business communication focuses mainly on opinions as opposed to an expository essay that is supposed to be neutral and unbiased on the topic.

Identify the type of organization each author used to develop the essay: topic, time order, space order, or informative process. With the Dinner Party Do-It-Yourself paper Dinner Party Table Settings, the author gives a step-by-step procedure for organization, also known as an informative processWith the essay, Cochlear Implants the author developed the essay by organizing the information about these hearing devices in the order he or she thought would be most logical.
Why do you think each author chose that type of organization for his or her essay? In what ways does this organizational choice make the essay effective? What effect could the author have achieved with another type of organization or another type of expository essay? I believe the author of the first essay, Dinner Party Table Settings; chose the informative process because the author wanted to give step-by-step instructions on how one hosts a dinner party. This is useful because it teaches the reader in precise steps. The author could have used a space order organization method, which would have provided a more learning experience. When it came to the third essay Cochlear Implants; the author organizes the essay by topic. The author first starts off by explaining what

    Sally's Thesis Statement

    • 474 Words
    • 2 Pages

Sally’s organization was choppy and unorganized, and was filled with detailed sentences left in the wrong order. For instance, Sally’s introduction paragraph lacked information that would be given later in the essay, and felt more like a first body paragraph rather than an introduction paragraph. Sally also started each paragraph explaining the reasoning behind something, rather than beginning with an introduction, which can be seen in paragraphs three and four. Failure of including an introduction sentence can quickly confuse and frustrate a reader, instead of allowing for an easy read that allows the reader to easily follow along. Altogether, Sally’s essay needs to be rearranged and constructed in a way that allows for the reader to follow along easily.…

Organization of each essay helps the reader understand the subject matter of the essay by effectively presenting the authors information, thoughts, opinions and conclusions. The subject matter organization of an essay should flow from the presentation of the subject from the thesis through the bodied information to the author’s opinions and the conclusion based on the information that will be presented. If we look at the essay titled “A Soul as Free as the Air: About Lucy Stone”, we can see that the essay flows from subject matter giving an account of her life using a chronological order.…

According Stanford Universities informational page on Expository Writing, they define this course as a type of oral or written discourse that is used to explain, describe, give information or inform. So when it comes to the topic of Expository Writing, most of us would readily agree with the fact that it is a very challenging and laborious course. While some of us believe that this course is all about formal essay writing while informing and explaining a topic, others contradict with the fact that you are also able to write on comparison, problem and solution, and cause and effect topics. Both of these statements are accurate, but knowledge from both of these statements is needed to excel in this class. Subsequent to watching the video “Expos Five” I have learned about real life college students and their experiences and opinions when taking the Expository Writing course.…

The two essays that I chose to read were, ‘A Soul as Free as the Air’ and ‘How to Succeed as an Online Student’. These two essays showed distinct characteristics that marked them each as one of the four types of expository essays—topic, time order, space order, and informative process. Both essays used facts and evidence to convey the concepts of the essay while also supporting the thesis statement, making it obvious that they are expository essays. Also, the information conveyed in both of these essays was presented unbiasedly.…

Our descriptions of each writing style are very similar. An observation you made about Personal writing pattern was how the style is created is really up to the author. Persuasive and expository seem to have more defined approached because they have a specific purpose to explain or persuade. With a Persuasive writing pattern you do have to be careful of your word choices to help persuade, and also incorporating an emotional tone can help win over the audience. Expository writing style gives an explanation using factual information that is unbiased.…

The topic organization puts the information in a logical fashion, like most important to least. The time order puts the information in a logical order of how the events happened. This organization is based on the order of time. Space order puts the essay in order based on the logical arrangement of location.
