Grade Justification

In English 101, during the course of the semester, I believe that I have overall earned a B+ as a final grade. During the semester my grades have been consistently average and my essays have gotten progressively more detailed and although they haven’t been the most concise they have gotten a lot stronger and showed more promise as the semester progressed which is showing that, during the time I have been learning things in class and applying those skills towards essays, and homework. During the class period I have also participated in almost, if not all of the class discussions, while making sure I voice my opinions and thoughts. While I was making sure to voice my opinion it caused debates among other classmates, which in return caused a lot of brainstorming to go on as well. In all, I believe that my work showed the accomplishments of academic writing, how academic writing works overall, the ability to read and comprehend critical works, and the accomplishment of being able to debate important topics. When I first entered the class, I never really have written a whole lot of papers. In my first essay I have clearly showed that I am not a strong writer, I was not aware of Subject-Verb-Object and I have clearly never learned about a clause. But as time when on I have slowly, and still am slowly but surely, learning how to use those two huge important pieces while incorporating them into my papers the correct way, all of which have been very challenging for me, but I have been trying my best to put forth throughout all my papers. While writing my papers I had effective and accurate awareness of a general audience, my tone and point of view was, to me, satisfactory. My punctuation, spelling and capitalization, had several errors, which were mostly common. There were also several inconsistent errors in the formatting of the paper as well. Although my writing is

What I need to do to improve and how I plan to do this: In future, instead of getting paralysis, or worrying that what I am writing about is not valid, I need to use what knowledge I have, back it up with theory and be confident that this is what’s needed. It would be better to get an essay in on time, than delay submitting it due to worry that it isn’t ‘good enough’.…

In my first essay on identity, I felt very comfortable, and I even thought that was easy, except for the thesis, in which I spent a little bit more than two hours. The rest was easy, but I did not understand the assignment and I failed my purpose of writing because I did not have a clear purpose. My second essay on community was better. The thesis statement was clear, I was more specific, but there were not stronger connections between my paragraphs and my thesis. Consequently, my evidence was unstructured and unclear. Then, in my third essay on competition, I did not add transitions in my paragraphs and I did not preserve the logical flow of the story. My fourth essay on Romance, was my favorite, my ideas were clear in my mind but not on my paper; the thesis was long and lacked of clarity to support my assertions. Next, my fourth essay on entertainment, I jumped from one idea to other without sticking to my thesis and my position was not clear. Finally, in my last essay on nature, what I feel was the worst of my essays; I used an assumption very difficult to illustrate and I misunderstood the assumption which leaded to lack of coherence and unity.…

Dear students of first year college English, also known here at El Camino as English 1A, it is time to learn how to argue in your work. Not just any arguments though, you must learn to place logical, ethical, and sometimes even emotional points in your papers. The most important technique to learn at this time in your education would be the use of logos in your essays. Logos is logic based arguments in written word or media and can seriously help you in supporting your claims. When you use logic in your papers you are using the cold hard the facts, the things that people struggle to deny are true or just inherently understand as right.…

This class has taught me many things about myself along with many necessary skills needed while writing. I know now that, through hard work and determination, I can achieve what I might think to be impossible. While reflecting back on my initial writing abilities, I see the weak, uneducated style of writing. Each essay shows my progression and improvement, and, after a while, the class began to become much easier. Today, after practicing throughout my essays this semester, I believe that I, in fact, have…

As a writer, there are things that I do well, but there are also things I could improve on to make my writing better. I’m pretty good at getting my point across, and getting people to understand what I’m trying to say. Another thing I’m good at is just writing the paper. Once I get started on a paper it is very easy for me to just keep writing until I’m done with it. However, when doing this I tend to not use the best grammar and be too wordy with my writing. I can definitely fix these issues, and continue to build on the things that I do well.…

I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. Initially, I read the first paper I wrote for the Quarter 1 Writing Assessment and I noticed that I didn’t follow the directions completely. As I read on, there were many simple sentences and not many transitional words.…

My work from the beginning of STEP to now has drastically changed especially in my writing. I never enjoyed writing essays because I did not do well with writing under pressure. After completing my essay, I felt confident about what I produced. However ,when my essay was handed back, it was noted that I lacked vocabulary, figurative language and my sentence structure was poor. After being in class, I have improved on my essay writing skills. I used more vocabulary terms than I usually would in my essays, had better sentence structure, and completed the entire essay with time to spare to check it over. In addition I learned that i have been using seven deadly writing sins in my writing. Continuously writing and having my peers edit my work helped me eliminated those sins from my writing. When school starts again, I will be prepared to write a timed essay with the new skills I have attained.…

In all seriousness, my writing is garbage, but it some what improved the slightest bit because I had a professor who actually knows how to teach a English class and not give little hints on telling us if our paper was trash. Instead, we were told straight if it was a good paper or not and it has probably helped me improve the most. In High School, I was always told that my papers were “good,” thankfully I finally had a Professor who can give it to me straight and tell us how we can improve our writing. On all the RRs, RWL, and formal essays that I have written these past twelve weeks, I have gotten educational criticism that has helped my pathetic writing become less pathetic and somewhat college worthy writing.…

My writing process has greatly changed throughout the course of this class. Starting at the beginning in August, I came into class rather cocky. I did not take the time to go over all of Dr. Trollinger’s comments on my rough draft and make multiple drafts. I was a victim of extreme procrastination. I had always excelled as an English / Rhetoric student in high school so I just assumed it would be a breeze. This was not the case. I completely and totally tanked the first paper. Because of this, I decided to greatly alter my writing process. This decision extremely benefited my future papers. I, now, take time to go over each and every draft, marking my mistakes as I go. I start papers rather early so I can take the paper piece by piece, reworking as I go. On each draft, Dr. T turns back, I print them out and write out what I need and don’t need to do. This has…

My writing was sloppy. The techniques I used to write with in grammar school were bad habits. I often wrote with double spacing, so my papers were only half the length of my peers’. I fancied cursive, which requires more space on the page, shortening my writing further. All the while, I thought my writing was on par with my classmates, and I was…

My writing has changed a lot in my first-semester essay writing class. I finally took a class that teaches me useful information and how to properly write an essay. Essay Writing overall was a fun experience it was a slow start for me in the beginning but once I was able to get the work done I was fine. There were a lot of positives to taking this class. I started the year struggling to come up with ideas to write about nut now I can brainstorm and put my words down on the paper better than ever. “If I could travel anyplace in the world for free, I would want to go to North Korea. I would love to see what it's like.” I struggled with proper punctuation and the use of commas and such throughout my high school career and I still struggle with it I hope to learn more about it in the near future. “Cars are one of the best inventions ever.” I needed some direction on making my sentences longer with getting to the point at the same time. There's a lot of small things I need to still improve on but I feel like I got a good start with the Essay Writing course. I got a lot of useful feedback from Mrs.Pennings on all my essays like when to use certain words and proper punctuation and some compliments the really…

Often times you find yourself in a dilemma between schoolwork and outside duty. You only have time to do one thing well, yet you want both of them to be finished perfectly. What would you do to accomplish them both extraordinarily? To many students, cheating seems to be “low-hanging fruit solution” for their obnoxious problem.…

I dislike English very much, however the fact that my teacher was very nice and helpful really aided the time I spent in lecture be less boring. I really learned a variety of new lessons from her class. It also greatly enhanced my writing skills. At the beginning of the quarter, I would receive D’s and F’s on the quizzes, and later on I began to receive many B’s. Also, I would receive C’s on my essays, however, I later also began to receive higher grades on my essays. In fact, about a week ago I surprisingly received a B- on an in class essay. I feel I have really improved on my writing skills and my professor has also positively commented on my improvement. She also reaffirmed my success by using the in class essay that I received a B- on as an example of what she considered to be a very good essay. One of my other academic goals this quarter was to pass my english lecture and so far it seems like I will accomplish my goal. For next quarter, I will be taking English 1A and I hope that I will have the same luck in having another great professor as well as improving my writing skills even…
