Marilyn is a mother whose life took a drastic turn when she had started college. Marilyn had taken an American History class where she met her husband James who had been her professor for the course. Later in the book Marilyn and James develop a relationship after she drops his class. “The next day, Marilyn came to his office hours to tell him that she’d dropped the class. Within a week they were lovers.” (Page 39) Marilyn had gone into her senior year of college, and was planning on where to go to medical school. “Four days later an even bigger surprise: Marilyn was pregnant.” (Page 50) Marilyn had to put her future on hold before she could return to school. She had wanted me to study the arts, mostly theatre, which I strongly disliked. Theatre has always scared me and I’ve always been extremely shy until you get to know me. She was buying me music from people I’d never heard of that were cool to listen to when she was in high school. She wanted me to fit in with the popular kids. One day my step mom had picked me up from cheer practice and asked one of the varsity cheerleaders if she would be my friend because I had been so shy at first in high school. She just assumed that since I was quiet at home that I didn’t have friends at school, but the truth was that I just didn’t want my friends to come to my house.
