In this day and age, it is hard to find someone who truly works hard enough to get what they want. A majority of society just sits around and takes advantage of the government, not bothering to lift a finger or to actually work. However, one individual particularly I have always looked up to because of his hard work is my father. No matter what the weather consists of, how terrible he is feeling or what all he has to sacrifice; he has constantly made it his priority to work hard to support his family. So what, exactly, does my father do that makes him so hard working? He puts vinyl siding on houses, installs replacement windows and hangs six inch gutter, through sunshine or snow. Does that sound easy? I thought so, too, until I spent a few days working with him. Needless to say, my judgment changed tremendously after freezing while hanging gutter on a local motel. You see, my dad is a jack of all trades. If he doesn't have enough work sold to make it through the month, then he takes every spare day and finds odd and end jobs to do. Whether he is working in tobacco and breaking his back, loading up scrap from old jobs and driving thirty minutes away to make a few extra bucks, turning in job applications in other cities or collecting cans to sell, he never lets a day pass him by without working hard. His actual career, working on houses, has a slow period during winter so he has to make ends meet to provide for the family at this time. This is when the odd and ends job come into play. On regular seasons, he has to earn jobs by word of mouth or through contractors and convince people to hire him instead of others who do the same job. How does he manage that? He offers free estimates and travels to all different counties, he went to school for replacement windows so he actually is certified and delivers speedy services once hired. With his contractors, he keeps a connection through customer satisfaction and a few Christmas presents every now and then, to ensure he

Living in the woods and working as a labored logger requires strength, endurance and the reason to want stay. The smell, taste and feel of the surroundings is what makes him happy. He believes no matter how hard you work; it still boils down to who you know – your contacts. His advice seems relatively simple and it does seem much easier is a person’s mind to just get everyone to like you rather than working hard. But perhaps he doesn’t have it figured out as well as he thinks he does. As he has reached his old age, the career path that he has chosen has began to work against him. During his younger years as a salesman, he was able to find a web of people that helped him find buyers. He used the tool of manipulation as well, and since he was well liked he did well in his profession. Until the day came that the people he worked closely with and pulled strings for him branched out and created their own networks, leaving Willy alone and essentially workless. Since then he has had a hard time making ends meet for his family. There should have been some indication that struggle would become his fate when he met Dave Singleman who was still working at the age of eighty-four when most people are living the retired life by then. If only he had based his work ethic off of something more realistic, something such as working hard instead of making it a popularity contest. Had Willy used this philosophy over being well-liked he might possibly find himself in a different situation, one that doesn’t involve having to borrow money from his neighbour, or struggle to keep…

When it comes to jobs, many people don’t have the best of luck. There are those who work in small little cubicles, having to deal with “insane” or “bipolar” boss but know that the pay is good, which provides for the family and they have a good spot staying in their department. When my sibling and I were growing up, my father worked a full time job, and also attended law school full time, so he was busy most of the time either sleeping, working, or studying. Looking back, he was a role model of what it means to work hard, and do what it takes to achieve your goals. A trait that I now try to emulate as a young adult trying to pursue a successful career, all of which I acquired from watching my father work as hard as he can to provide for his family. While my father was going through school and…

As a single mother, I saw my mother work two jobs at times to make sure food was on the table and bills were paid. Being just a kid I could not work or help as much as I would have liked to in order to help out, working with my dad I was able to gain valuable insight as well as experience from a young age as well as a strong work ethic that I feel gave me a better ability to deal with adversity as I have matured. Since I had some basic labor training in janitorial and lawn maintenance I could start a small lawn care business cutting grass in my neighborhood during spring and summer months, raking leaves in the fall, and lastly shoveling driveways in the winter time. Being able to understand how I could make some extra money was a nice feeling but I felt extreme joy being able to give back to my mother and help around the house knowing that it wasn’t much but it was…
