“I got a letter”
Objective:
1) Students will be able to sing I got a letter on pitch
2) Students will become visually and aurally familiar with syncopation
3) Students will be able to identify words/syllables from rhythms

Music for I got a Letter
Hand drum
Projector
Procedure:
1. Discuss the learning objectives: be able to …show more content…
Sing the song to the students as they keep a steady beat on their laps
3. Chunk the rhythm to the students
a. Chunk the A section speaking (I got a letter this mor-ning, oh, yeah, I got a letter this mor-ning, oh, yeah)
b. Have students say the rhythm back to me
4. Chunk the A section, singing
a. Chunk the first sub phrase (I got a)
i. Explain that this is syncopation and show the rhythm on the projector ii. Sing the phrase for them and have the students echo it back and clap the rhythm as they sing iii. Have students sing the phrase by themselves continue to clap the rhythm iv. Instruct students to clap the syncopated rhythm whenever they see/hear it
b. Stitch the whole first phrase together (I got a letter this morning, oh yeah)
i. Sing the whole first phrase for the students and have them echo it back (still clapping only the syncopated rhythms) ii. Have the students sing the first phrase back to me iii. Put in a hand motion showing melodic direction for “oh yeah”
c. Stitch the whole A section (I got a letter this morning, oh yeah; I got a letter this morning, oh yeah)
i. Sing the second phrase for the students and have them echo it back (still clapping only the syncopated
