First day of work
One midsummer afternoon in St. Augustine Florida, the beach was calling my name, and I was shouting right back at it. This was the norm for me in summer 2013. I had it pretty easy for the first sixteen years of my life, being able to go out with no responsibilities, no worry at all. I found myself lurking around the house until finally deciding to surf away my day with friends. While on the car ride home with my bothersome brother and sister I found myself suddenly finding the urge to become more independent. I needed a job.
Learning something new can be a scary experience. One of the hardest things to do in life, is adjust from being a kid with very little responsibility, to finding your place in the work world. I was financially sound back home so finding a job wasn’t necessary, but I decided that having a job would be a savvy thing to have. This is one of the most critical times in my life as far as “finding who you are”, and for me It might as well be at Nike factory outlet store. Me and three other strangers were led to the back of Nike by a six foot ten basketball player looking guy, who supposedly was going to teach us everything we needed to know to survive at nike. Of course every one of those “strangers” had years of experience on me, so integrating with everyone in an environment like that is demanding. Imagine being the youngest at an interview with no work experience being asked situational type questions. Its not easy to impress the manager when all you can talk about is your years of high school sports and slacker beach life. Growing up you are taught through every single thing you do, dad always seems to be your right hand man when you are troubled. The work place seems to be a little bit different. When you have people making a living off eight dollars an hour they seem to be care free and not willing to teach the new guy anything. So tall basketball player guy, scatters us in the back and tells us to start working. What happened to teaching

Slavery was always a controversial issue in America. Many people saw slavery as an essential part of life in every aspect, while others saw it as immoral and an injustice to humanity. In the 1840s when Manifest Destiny started to thrive, things began to heat up. New territories meant a possibility for a new slave or free state in America. Because the new territories were allowed the right of popular sovereignty to determine whether they would have slaves or not, abolitionists and non-abolitionists were at a constant battle to gain a new state.…

I spent the end of May and beginning of June applying for any activity job or volunteer opportunity that held my interest. I spent hours preparing for interviews, writing lengthy letters and internally panicking at every ring of the phone. in June I started my first job at the Hebron Carnival, and I could not have been more excited. I promised myself that I would work my hardest to make the carnival a better place than when I arrived. I also was accepted by the volunteer program at Peninsula Regional Medical Center and began work there every Monday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. that was the most educational job I have ever had the pleasure of working at.Also in June I applied to work at Azar Eye Institute and received a position there. I worked there Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7 to 5:30. even after balancing my workload I was informed that I got a job volunteering at the library; which I did Monday and Thursday afternoons, and I also got a job working with children and animals at the Pemberton nature camp. Five jobs for a 15-year-old without a license sounds overwhelming, and it was. However, I loved every minute of it. I liked being part of the team, I liked being relied on by my fellow staff members, and most of all I liked having a…

As a child, if someone told me that my first job would be in the food service, I would accuse them of lying. If they told me I would absolutely love it? Impossible, I’d say. It will never happen. After graduating from high school I didn’t think about going to college, all I wanted to do was work, hang out with friends and play video games. So at the age of 17, I started working for my uncle at his liquor store for about a year. Throughout that time I attained a great amount of skills; ever where from management to customer service skills. With that being said, I thought about expanding; maybe getting a job elsewhere that will pay me a higher salary for the skills that I have. I applied to Liz Claiborne Inc. in North Bergen, NJ at the age of 18 and got hired as a product coordinator. I was so excited; I was only 18 and about to start making a salary nearly equivalent to that of a college graduate. At this point I thought to myself; “wow! I don’t need to go to college to make money”. I continued working for Liz Claiborne but after three years noticed what I had as a career wasn’t what really interested me, nor something that I wanted for the rest of my life. I was really just doing it for the money. Then, that’s when I realized in order to obtain a career that I always dreamt of, that college was something that I needed to accomplish. I started researching and asking myself questions like “why am I going to college? What am I going to get out of it?” then came up with answers, “if I don’t go to college I most likely won’t have a career of my choice”. If I graduate from college I will have an opportunity of living the American dream; a beautiful family, an enormous house, and nice…

So, here I am… A forty-three year old “life educated” woman who was recently unemployed from my beloved field of Horticulture, in the winter and during the Holidays. Great! Just great! It is not something I have ever experienced before, unemployed during the holiday season and I don’t like it one bit. What I am now realizing is that by getting a college education, it will help to open so many more doors and give me opportunities to not only better educate myself and provide me with a more financially successful life, but fill a void that I missed out on over Twenty-five years ago by not going to college right out of High School.…

I grew up in a small fishing village in Maine, surrounded by family. Expectations and aspirations are limited in such an environment. I could have made a living exploiting the sea, but chose to do similar work as a corporate executive. Although I have no siblings, my hometown contains over fifty family members, and our agenda of family activities is always packed. Most of my family is employed in the commercial fishing industry, which instilled in me at a very young age, the concept of work. At age eleven, I started babysitting and mowing lawns, and at the age of fifteen I applied for my lobster license. The first summer with my license, I took a job as a sternperson with a fellow female. We were the only two females out there, which was definitely an experience. When the lobstering season ended that year, I took a job at a grocery store bagging groceries. I saved enough money to build a boat and to buy fifty lobster traps; I was on my way. The following summer I continued to work as a sternperson, and I also fished my own traps. I continued lobstering throughout the rest of high school and college, and it helped me finance my college education.…
