Black people used to be known as property and they were slaves. They were not allowed to vote, segregation was in effect, and they couldn’t get the same educational opportunities. Slaves came to America, in 1619. “Some historians have estimated that 6 to 7 million slaves were imported the New World during the 18th century alone…” (4) There was also segregation, which were part of the Jim Crow laws. “Persons of color” were required to be separated from whites in railroad cars and depots, hotels, theaters, restaurants, barber shops and other establishments.” (4) These series of events lead to the supreme court case “Plessy v. Ferguson” where the government established the “separate but equal” code of conduct. It allowed for equal recognition of all races but still allowed for people to be segregated based on race. Another very important court case for Black Rights was the case, “Brown v Board of Education.” This was a court case where the supreme court ruled against itself and desegregated
