A final outside paving is then applied and a single unit is completed. In areas of extreme desert, where good quality materials are rare, the walls were constructed from a combination of dirt, wood, and woven mats. This goes to show the remarkable ingenuity of the builders. While some sections of the wall near tourist attractions have been repaired and reconstructed, other portions of the wall are in poor shape. In addition to the natural effects of corrosion, many other preventable factors have contributed to the current status of much of the Great Wall. Many sections fall prey to vandalism such as graffiti. Other parts of the Wall have been destroyed to make room for ongoing construction.
