Shi Huangdi
Shi Huangdi was the first Emperor of China, but how did he come to the throne?
Shi Huangdi was first introduced to the throne when he was 13 years old, due to his father’s death, in 247 BC. However, by law, he was too young to rule, when he turned 22 in 238 BC, he was acceptable to rule Qin. He was very ambitious and wanted to rule all the states. He started by taking over Han and then continuing to Wei, Zhao, Yen, Chu and Chi. By 221 BC all the states were unified, and Shi Huangdi became the first Emperor of China.
The Great Wall of China was one of Shi Huangdi’s most noted accomplishments, but how did it come of any good to China?
During the time period of the Warring States; this is when the states of Chu, Qi, Yan , Wei, Zhao and Qin were in conflict. Each state began to build walls as a defense against potential enemies. When Shi Huangdi unified all of these states, he ordered for all the existing walls to connect and extend to the point where invasion was no longer possible. Three groups were ordered to build the wall; soldiers, common people and criminals. Many people died during the building process, but it came very handy when invitations were attempted. When the warring states were recently unified, all of the states had different language. Shi Huangdi simplified the number of written characters to make one language that everyone could understand. Each state also had it’s own way of money, weighing and distance, these differences made it difficult for traders to do their job.
