Group Work
Essay 1: Group Projects Group work is something that has been hit or miss in the work or school world for a very long time. There is a very negative attitude about group work the second it is assigned. The truth is that group work can actually make the performance of the individuals go down but, there are also very positive aspects to group work that many people don’t usually think of. In this paper, I will explore some of the pros and cons to group work, look at some possible solutions to the problems, and I will reflect on some of the past experiences I have had in group work. Let’s first start off with the positive things that group work can bring to table. From a young age, children are put into group situations to learn how to socialize and work with other people. These groups help them develop and learn how to appropriately interact in the world when they have grown and matured. Later in life, group is still assigned in many areas of a person’s life; at home, at school, and at work. Some of the positive aspects of group work is that is teaches teamwork and communication. People must be verbal and opinionated to get work done properly and on time. Almost always, a leader will emerge. This person tends to be someone who has an authoritative personality. It can teach someone leadership ship skills and organization. Many times, opinions will differ and debates will arise. In this sense, it can teach people good negotiating skills and how to defend a position. The most important pro to group work is that it teach critical thinking and problem solving. There will never be a time when everyone agrees. Many times, people must compromise to get a good and productive outcome.
So, there are a lot of reasons why group work is good. That is probably why it is still widely used today. Let’s face it, sometimes projects are just too big to be tackled by one person. Can you imagine if one person built the Eifel Tower all by themselves? It’s impossible. People had to

In my opinion, group work is a type of cooperative learning that helps people to accomplish a certain task in a faster and more effective manner. Team working also helps to achieve the tasks that are impossible to finish by one individual. However, if people in a group have a lot of conflicts, group work will not be able to achieve as much as we expected. There are many reasons which lead to dissatisfaction in group work such as individualism as well as conflicts in opinion and time.…

When effective group management and high organisation skills are applied, group work can bring students a wide range of skills and abilities related to people and problem solving. Group work demonstrates student’s capacity to communicate effectively, share and consider opinions, establish trust, analyse the group process, resolve conflicts and also develop their creativity. However, the constructive learning and beneficial results does not always come as a result of group work. Throughout my educational career, I have always disliked group work. To me, group work is only beneficial to those individuals that normally do poorly on projects and who view the opportunity of working in a group as a chance to improve their own grades at the cost of the other individuals in the group. When working on a project on my own, I strive for perfection by watching every detail closely—from the font on a page to the alignment of sentences on a PowerPoint presentation. But, since I am not my own teacher and because I am not able to assign myself my own homework assignments, I have had to work in groups on many occasions. And although I continue to strive for perfection while working on a group project, this is not always possible—and so to me, completing a group project that does not satisfy my own perfect standards leads to heartbreak each and every single time.…

Working in a group also relieves some of the pressure off of an individual. In other words the responsibility for a project does not fall all on one persons shoulders. The work can be evenly distributed among members so that not one person is overwhelmed with work. Many times when working in a group, you get to see different perspectives of issues and can better use your skills to accomplish the goal that you are working…

Positive things about working in groups are very limited. One of the positive things about group work is that work can be divided among several people, which can help the job get done faster than if it was all done by one person; like John Heywood said: “Many hands make light work.” Another good thing is that a group of people brainstorming together will come up with more ideas and solutions than a single person working alone. Vincent Lombardi, an NFL coach, once said that “Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” Everyone must do his or her part in order to be successful and get a good evaluation. This does not always happen.…

Another benefit of group work is the increased likelihood of catching errors. At one time or another, we all make stupid mistakes, like the man who built a boat in his basement and then wasn’t able to get it out the door. Working in a group increases the chance that foolish errors like this won’t slip by. Sometimes, of course, errors aren’t so obvious, which makes groups even more valuable as an error-checking mechanism. Another side to the error-detecting story is the risk that group members will support each other in a bad idea.…
