Young children around America often get into many accidents because of their lack of knowledge. In a USA Today article, they assert “If they [kid] find it [guns], they'll play with it”(A.7). Most kids that don’t know what an object is tend to mess around with it until they find out what it is and does. With firearms, when they found out what it does, it’s usually too …show more content…
late. The article even has example of accidents like, a “3-year-old in Dallas, Ga., who found his dad's .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol on April 26 and shot himself in the chest”. (USA Today A.7) Example like this just show that, if left to figure out what a firearm is the hard way, devastating accidents can occur.
Accidents like these also happen because gun are ingrained in our culture. James E. Causey quotes “Guns are everywhere, with one study saying that there are enough guns in the United States to arm every man, woman and child”.(1) The parents that want to shelter their children from guns may find it difficult to do so with how many gun owner are around. They may be able to keep the presence of firearms out of their homes but outside their homes, they may be shown or exposed to them. And teenager are no exception. Indeed, Carina Storrs adds, “For every 10-point decrease in a state's gun law score, a teen was 9% more likely to report having carried a gun at least once in the last month” (1). Additional Causey adds “if guns are as accessible as is sex these days--shouldn't they be taught how to protect themselves?” (Causey 1) Causey compare the accessibility of guns to sex because most parent don’t want their kids around either of them, but we know that eventually, they start have sex without our knowledge. What stopping them from sneaking with a gun or being near them. Causey even adds, “Just as kids need to be educated to protect themselves from STDs and unwanted pregnancies, they also should be educated on proper gun use” (Causey 1). Just as he says, we should teach them the subject and how to protect themselves.
If guns are so easy to access, it makes sense to teach and protect our children.
In Chris Sacco article, he claims “Proper gun safety should, if logic prevails, include educating children about the dangers of firearms”. (1) Most parents that are against gun safety being taught to their kid may misunderstand the purpose of it. They believe it’s only good for teaching children how to shoot guns and encouraging them more to play with them, but that’s far from the goal. It teaching children that firearms are that can injury other as Sacco states “guns can and will kill them and any individual they point them at” (Sacco 1). In order to learn gun safety, the child doesn’t need to interact with it, they just need to know the dangers of it and a few simple rules. As told by Jeff and Chris Knox, “Current training teaches a layered approach to gun safety around kids” (A.7). Method restricts access to the firearms until the instructor believe the trainee has full understanding of gun safety. To prevent further accidents and misfires, kids should be informed of the dangers of
firearms.
