Gym Work Scenarios
After closely analyzing my field notes for the gym and work scenario, I can agree with the proposal that people perform different behaviors in different situations. At the gym, the setting (front) is a room full of workout machines that people utilize to eventually reach a specific body goal. In this scenario, I play the role of a sporty girl, one who enjoys the adrenaline from running and lifting weights. My audience consists of other sporty individuals who are there for the same reason. The front for my work scenario consistent of multiple desks, one for each individual. At my job, I feel as though I am a “student” versus when I am at the gym, I feel like a role model. This is because at the gym, I am surrounded by people my age, while at work, adults control the flow of the room and I look up to them for guidance. The region of the gym is very strict in terms of dress code. Most people are …show more content…
The environment definitely has an impact. I believe it is clear to my audience at the gym that I want to work out for specific results, and at work, it is clear to my audience that I am working towards building my experience for my future careers. Different environments constitutes different attitudes. We all portray different roles depending on the situation we are in, in order to obtain the benefits from that given scenario. In this case, I suppose there is no “true self”. I don’t think that someone can act the same in every situation they are in. For example, one can enjoy a night out with friends and drink, but this type of behavior is not appropriate if they have to show up in court the next day as a lawyer. The idea of a “true self” is about maturity and one’s ability to act appropriately depending on their environment. Overall, I believe the idea of a “true self” comes from wanting to achieve goals in the long run and different environments require different roles to getting

Heath, as defined by the World Health Organization, is a “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity”. When studying the concept of health and healthy lifestyles, from a sociological standpoint, this definition remains the basis for all perspectives. Health is not only a biological state, but a bounty of social occurrences, therefore ultimately being the result of a one’s social environment. In our ethnography study of a common gym environment, this sociological concept of healthy lifestyles heavily prevails, being derived from the location, the atmosphere, and the behaviors of…

The culture of the gym is slowly coming together just after two days of observations. The gym is primarily a male dominant place to do, but in our college the only area that is completely dominant is the weight lifting area and that’s only during prime hours. Also on the note of personal space there is noticeably a tendency for both male and female to have a certain amount of space around them like a personal bubble.…

I can directly relate with this quote, I’m sure quite a few people can. So often, we act differently in private than we do with others. Of course, it’s all dependent upon who the ‘others’ are. For example, we may feel more comfortable being our true selves with our friends and become more reserved with colleagues. This is not necessarily how all humans behave, some folks have no problem being exactly who they are at all times no matter whose company they are in. I admire this quality when it is not coming from someone I perceive as obnoxious. Certainly, factors such as perception, culture, and the people we are communicating with will influence how we behave in public as opposed to private.…

What does it mean to “be yourself”? What does it mean to conform to comply with others standards or opinions? Do you ever change your appearance, behaviors, or actions based on what you believe others will think? When venturing into the topic of conformity vs individuality, I strongly believe that you should strive to both exercise conformity and individuality in your life. It feels great to be part of a group, to fit in, but in doing so DO NOT lose sense of who you truly are. If in social situations you find yourself being steered to talk differently, act differently, or simply do things differently from the way you truly are, then you may be conforming in order to fit in. Be who you genuinely are, not who people want you to be. Ultimately,…

In order to have a high self-esteem and be happy, people need to establish what self is. Everyone has self-esteem according to Twenge. Since childhood, people are told to “just be themselves,” so that others can accept us for who we really are. Even though being true to oneself personality wise, people act differently, depending on the situation at hand. One does not usually act the same way in school as they do in a home setting. One does not talk the same way to a friend as they do to a teacher. It is all dependent on what the situation calls for. Twenge says that when wanting to know how to act in a social situation, one should “just be themselves” (Twenge 491). With this being said, a person with high self-esteem will have the confidence to be themselves because they value who they are, while a person with low self-esteem will find it hard to be themselves because they will think that people will not like them for who they are. Therefore, a front is put up and people act differently when interacting…

Untied states is known to have the most obsessed people in the world, yet they continue to not do anything about it. In Shrewsbury high school we have Gym 2 days out of a 7 day schedule, and sometimes you can end up not having gym for a whole week. The recommended exercise per week is 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. Most teenagers don’t even exercise on there own outside of school excluding those who participate in sports. Our health is just as important as your educations. They should change Gym from 2 days out of a 7 day schedule to making it 3 days per week. I feel that providing gym more during the week can help teens reach or be closer to reaching there…

A cheer gym will create a separate practice space away from everyone else. Currently, the cheerleaders and I practice in the cafeteria. It is unsanitary to practice in there. As we stunt and try new things, the signs are in our way and that can cause a safety hazard. Our coach, Coach Kimi, is constantly up in the front office. She fights for space and practice times for us. We have been stuck in the cafeteria since the beginning of basketball season and we are tired of it. Other athletes complain about us pushing the mats into the mini gym during their practice time.…

In the area of social psychology the self is the focus of study. Psychologist have pondered on questions such as what is the self?, what causes a person to develop a self?, does oneself vary from one person to the next person’s self?, and what causes a person to worry about the self? (Myers, 2010). Social psychology has revealed that self is not the same from person to person, if a person is asked to identify self his or her response will change from one person to the next. However, the multiple responses does not make one answer wrong over the next person’s answer, it is just a matter of each individual determining what is self in their own mind. Because of this it is often wondered how many self’s there are. If a person were to be asked this, one might be inclined to answer that more than exists, this response would be correct usually viewed is the body self, interpersonal self, inner self, and the social self. The self-recognized self identifies what is considered yourself; however, this does not mean that other peoples see you the same. There are a few theories that express this such as the spotlight effect and the illusion of transparency. The spotlight effect the belief of a person that all eyes are on them and everyone is focusing all their attention on how one’s appearance or behavior, when in reality they really are not (Myers, 2010). The illusion of transparency is the idea of a person being aware of their own emotions in turn it is believed that others can read their emotions as they seem to be obvious (Myers, 2010). These theories utilize the social world to impact a person’s concept of self as well as their thought.…
