Homosexual Teachers at Schools

Can openly homosexual teachers work at schools with children?

Being an English Teacher in Chile is kind of a hard experience, but being an openly gay teacher is even more criticized, because you have to deal with many factors that make your life more difficult. Chile is characterized for having narrow-minded, chauvinist, and homophobic people. It was just in the early 2000’s when the gay people started to say in public their personal sexual condition without being punished or pointed as “weird”. In my personal experience as a gay English teacher, I can say that many Chilean teachers of English are gay because I have worked in many different contexts – private, subsidized and public school – where I have had at least two colleagues that share the same sexual condition as me. So now I want to answer the following question under my personal point of view: Can openly homosexual teachers work at schools with children?

It is proved that Gays and lesbians are always forced to be in the closet, when closet are for clothes, not for people and their civilizations. How would straight people feel if they were forced to live in a completely lie all the time or always hide about who are they? It is a matter of fact that they would feel just as bad as many gays and lesbians do. I will never expect that from anyone, and it is a horrible way to treat other human beings.

One problem Gay teachers have to face is the fear and prejudice of parent who thinks “being gay” means “uncontrolled sexual depravity”; when this thought jump out into the light, they think their children must not be near the gay teacher. Parents with their openly hostile views and desire to cause all manner of trouble for the teacher (otherwise just as qualified as any other) can be seen as a very negative influence on the class and the morale of the school.

An openly Gay Teacher can teach Math, Science or English just as well or badly even as an

The sex education system is ruled by a heteronormative ideal that only men and women are accepted in this system. Questions about sexuality like stated are often met with ill replies and ridicule. There is a complete lack of same sex education in this system with little to no reference to same sex and if there is a mention it is often in poor statements. As example when Linda asked about any “books of teenage lesbians” (Garcia, 2012) the teacher yelled out demanding to know who asked the question and how inappropriate it was, even though she wanted to learn about her…

There would be no need to discuss the sex aspect of the LGBTQ community, nor anything to do with human reproduction. If we were to begin incorporating LGBTQ issues within the classroom curriculum at elementary school levels, we would help prevent the misunderstandings and stereotypes that are developed at a young age and carried through…

All students should have a safe and comfortable environment in school. Homosexuals should not be discriminated just because they are attracted to the people of the same gender. Society should accept them for who they are and treat them equally as they are also human beings and have feelings. Heterosexuals should try to put ourselves in their shoes and try to…

Yes, I do agree with this statement because it is a subject that shouldn’t matter. The students are there to get an education, not know about their professors sexual orientation. Most people try to avoid issues concerning homosexuality by being neutral even if they have a problem with it. Schools face a bigger problem staying neutral since they must protect students’ rights, as well as maintaining order for the entire school. In the article “Young, Gay and Murdered” by Ramin Setoodeh, Larry King was a young man with a very bubbly personality and a very flamboyant appearance. His time at E.O. Green was tough; Larry was teased very often about his sexuality. Although Larry did not help the situation by making remarks that pushed other boys further into homophobia. Larry was interested in a boy named Brandon; however Brandon did not feel comfortable with the flirtatious remarks towards him. Brandon felt the only option to take care of his situation with Larry was to kill him. The staff at E.O. Green should have taken the time to investigate what was going on between the two boys. This…

These factors play into students school settings. Students can feel out of place or awkward in situations where they do not fit the identified gender norms. Often this is seen when students identify as homosexual. Gender roles are often misconstrued when it comes to students who identify as gay or lesbian. Society has deemed that there must always be a female and male counterpart in any relationship, including homosexual relationships. Two men or two women will be asked which person fulfills which rule. However, this is preposterous question since it is possible for both individuals to fulfill both male and feminine…

Although children who identify as homosexual are not sent to a different school, they are still treated differently in certain areas. In the Rolling Stone article, “One Town’s War on Gay Teens,” it claims that there is a “suicide epidemic” occurring in Anoka County. The mass amount of suicides began after Michelle Bachman and the school board declared that they would be instating a policy that made it so staff could not discuss or address anything involving homosexuality. Unfortunately, this included bullying. If a student was being bullied because of their sexual orientation, the staff would not be able to say anything, for fear of losing their jobs.…

Homosexuality has been a hot topic for the last fifty or so years, as it has been at various times in the past. There are different theories pertaining to the history of homosexuality. Essentialists say it has existed in all times and cultures, while social constructionists believe that it has arisen only in certain places and eras (ancient Greece, for instance) (Bailey 54). Its social acceptability has varied widely as well. The stigma of non-heterosexuality has faded considerably in the twenty-first century. Psychology no longer views homosexuality, bisexuality, and transexuality through a lens of pathology, instead recognizing that lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgenders (collectively referred to as LGBT individuals) have particular issues related to their minority status and the ways in which they are viewed by American society (Garnets and Kimmel, Introduction 2). Formation of an identity that is faithful to the self rather than formed according to societal expectations is now encouraged and recognized as healthy. Nonetheless, many in the heterosexual population are not fully informed about homosexuality and struggle to understand how the needs and outlooks of their LGBT neighbors differ from their own. This paper looks at several aspects of the lives of LGBT individuals, and argues that equal rights for this community have yet to be achieved in this country.…

When one school district had decided that their policy of teaching homosexuality in sex-ed classes was imposturous, because it generated the idea homosexuality was okay. The school created a new policy in which bashed students whom were gay and those whom were perceived as being gay. Their policy “No Homo Promo” created hostility among the student body. It allowed for all bullying to be overlooked, ignored, and also reinforced the idea teachers could not teach certain subjects. According to the article, “teachers were not allowed to mention gays in any context” (Erdely, 2012). Ultimately, this policy led to nine students committing suicide because, they could not take societal pressure any longer. This group of adolescents wanted society to accept them as being normal individuals. Eventually, the school allowed an organization (referred to as GSA) to be created which, allowed for students whom were homosexual to have a place to go to feel safe. As stated in the article, “I joined the GSA cause I wanted to be just like her. I wanted to be nice and – loved” (Erdely,…

    Same Sex Classrooms

I would first like to reflect on my topic. The main focus of the paper is to point out the advantages and benefits of having same-sex schools. Since I am for same-sex schools, the first sentence of the introduction will be general. I will quote a strong general statement that will grab the reader’s attention and make them want to read more without getting bored. After that, I am planning on including one or two rhetorical questions, like: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to attend same-sex school, where your classmates are the same gender as you? The question will be followed by an answer: I have the personal experience of attending an elementary school in India that was designed for all girls. In addition, I will continue talking more about my experience and how memorable it was. Some of the things I will say are: It was different than going to a coeducation school, it benefited me by teaching me respect and good manners, I learned some important things that every child should learn and experience, such as respecting your teachers, etc. Basically, the main purpose of making the introductory paragraph strong is to convince the readers to be on the proponent’s side and to let them know what side I am taking and the reasons for doing so. That’s where my thesis statement will come in. I want to make the thesis unbiased. To do that, I will say something that shows that there are some people against same-sex schools. In addition, I want to prove my side stronger and better. For thesis, I will say: Despite the fact that some people disagree with single-gender school, I believe that same-sex school should be allowed in today 's world because it improves academic standards, eliminates distraction, and reduces violence that occur daily. That way, I am not just talking about my side and that it is the best. The word “despiteâ€? will make my statement fair.…
