such as gold, spices, slaves, and other goods from africa to asia. Christopher was italian not spanish, so why would the spanish monarchy hire him for this expedition?
Queen isabella and king ferdinand was after what columbus was after: fame and fortune.
That is how he convinced them to help fund his voyage. He promised they would have fame and riches then they could imagine if he made it there. They took his word and funded his 3 ships and some of the best navigators and sailors they could give. The king and queen rejected him 2 times and took his proposal the 3rd time and of he went on august 3rd. Why was his route different from the others? The other routes to asia from europe was hostile waters from the french and portuguese armies there was no safe way around. Columbus's first voyage almost cost him his life when he and his fleet was attacked by french naval ships and he was the only survivor. So he was bound to find the new route if he was to safely and quickly complete his mission. His route was to cross and sail the atlantic ocean west till he hit land which would be asia so he thought.
Columbus hit the cuban islands and had 3 more voyages to inform spain of what he found he made not have found asia but something better. In his next voyages he collected golds and other goods and spain kept funding him to go back and forth and bring goods back and forth. He had one more voyage before he gain all of his riches back and have all his
titles.
In 1502 he set out to find a route to the indian ocean but was never successful. One storm crippled and destroyed one of his ships. Also the spaniards obsession with gold continued and refused to feed the sailors. Columbus wanted to punish the natives because they wouldn't trade with them. He told them he would take their moon and sure enough there was a lunar eclipse and the natives were alarmed by it so they decided to trade with the spanish and columbus. Many of natives lost their lives from not only the spanish but also from the diseases brought from europe to the americas.
Soon to follow columbus's death he struggled to restore his titles and some riches. After a while he regained all of his lost riches but not his titles. On May 20 1506 he died believing he was the man who found a shorter passage to asia.
