This made learning very difficult, because what one school was just learning another school was just finishing. I often encountered this situation and it always seemed to be at the most crucial learning stages. When I started to learn how to read and write I was constantly frustrated. I would go to one school that was just starting to learn to read and I would do pretty good. I was just beginning to understand the concept of reading and writing and then I moved, which made learning so much harder. The school I moved to already knew how to read, so I was not only embarrassed because I couldn’t but I was also quickly falling behind in my school work. I would go home from school every night and cry attempting to read a book, trying to understand how the letters formed together to make words and how all the words made a sentence, and how all the sentences together made a story. The more I couldn’t understand, the more I’d become discouraged. I eventually learned between a few members of my family pushing me, and the help of a very dedicated teacher. I started out with books like Dr. Suess and then I went on to read everything I possibly could. I couldn’t stop reading. I’d read ads, and newspapers, or soap bottles and anything else that had

At two years old sitting on my grandma’s bed in a small, cozy house in a little town of El Salvador where I’m from, every morning and afternoon I would be surrounded by a bunch of magazines and newspapers that my grandmother used to read. Hola magazine which talked about the royalty and famous people, Vanidades magazine which was about beauty tips, famous people and fashion, and La Prensa Grafica one of our national newspapers that everyday keeps the people informed with what is happening with government, society, economics, sports, etc, were the ones that kept me entertained almost all day. As I write this, I have my four year old niece sitting next to me saying, “Wow, you have a lot of drawing on your page!” All I can do is laugh to myself and think that was once me, not knowing the meaning of each word and innocently intrigued by the simple presence of words on a paper. This interest would soon turn into the curiosity to read. Hoping to read as gracefully as my mother when she read bible stories before my twin sister and I would drift off to sleep, I was devastated to find out I didn’t read as well as the other children. In fact, I had to be pulled from my reading class to a remedial class with one on one interaction between the teacher and student. As disappointed as I was then, I’ll…

My literacy journey has been going full speed since I was able to comprehend the words that my parents spoke to me. Growing up I was a swift learner, so the concepts of reading, writing, and spelling came quick to me. My perfectionist tendencies assisted me in my motivation to learn to words, how to spell them, and how to use them. My parents took notice of my accelerated learning ability, so they pushed it fully. Going to the library was a fun activity that usually occurred once or twice a week, where I was encouraged to explore all of the books and figure out what I liked the most. They would challenge me by assisting me in figuring out things on my own, instead of babying me through everything that I found confusing.…

Crying, I noticed, got a quick response from my parents, and usually some food. My communication development was identical to every other child learning to talk. Listening.
