Being literate is an important part of life. You must be able to read and write to do most everything. The majority of people in today’s society are literate, which is a huge improvement from older generations like my grandparents age and older. Due to kids having to drop out of school at young ages and not always going, many older generations are either mostly illiterate or are completely illiterate. Learning to become literate is a journey of its own, one that nobody can do for you, but help guide you in the right direction. This made learning very difficult, because what one school was just learning another school was just finishing. I often encountered this situation and it always seemed to be at the most crucial learning stages. When I started to learn how to read and write I was constantly frustrated. I would go to one school that was just starting to learn to read and I would do pretty good. I was just beginning to understand the concept of reading and writing and then I moved, which made learning so much harder. The school I moved to already knew how to read, so I was not only embarrassed because I couldn’t but I was also quickly falling behind in my school work. I would go home from school every night and cry attempting to read a book, trying to understand how the letters formed together to make words and how all the words made a sentence, and how all the sentences together made a story. The more I couldn’t understand, the more I’d become discouraged. I eventually learned between a few members of my family pushing me, and the help of a very dedicated teacher. I started out with books like Dr. Suess and then I went on to read everything I possibly could. I couldn’t stop reading. I’d read ads, and newspapers, or soap bottles and anything else that had
