The bravery it took to email Stefanie helped me to overcome my avoidance of authority; for most of my life, I had thought people in powerful jobs were too busy for me and so I had always tried not to bother them. The volunteering also took extreme commitment, making me a more responsible person. In my junior year, I volunteered three days a week from 2-5pm, and on top of my school work and other extracurricular activities, it was a lot to handle. My work at the United Way earned me nominations for several awards, enough hours to qualify for Bright Futures and other scholarships, as well as great connections to Rotary Clubs and other organizations; these connections gained me entry into programs to sharpen my leadership skills, which just continued to increase the opportunities I had to further myself as a leader and as a person.
