Abstract (see copy that was turned in)
Discussion:
Introduction
In the last decade, the music industry as a whole has been struggling with sales and financial downfalls due to the popularity of (mostly digital) pirated music In the last decade there had been a dramatic decrease in sales of physical records and a dramatic increase in the sales of digital music (this already caused financial issues for music companies)
Piracy became much easier with the rise of digital music sales because thousands of websites were created that gave away illegally downloaded songs and virtually anyone with a computer could have access to free music
Merge with EMI
UMG executives claim that their recent merge with EMI (other major music company) will fight piracy because it will allow the company to make even more new distribution deals to discourage copyright infringement many industry experts feel that the merge was a bad idea because now, the company is a huge monopoly in the music industry and is creating an over concentrated music market along with inflated prices (after all, UMG needs more money now because they spent 1.6 billion on the merge)
Piracy Referral Form
Online form that anyone can fill out if they want to report acts of piracy
Lowering prices and licensing digital music streaming services
UMG has licensed Spotify (an online music streaming website that allows customers a six month free trial to listen to music and then charges a low monthly fee for acess to a set number of songs for month
Unfortunately, raising prices for UMG’s music is difficult because ultimately, the company’s fate lies in the hands of it’s power buyers (especially Apple)
