Everyone Started Somewhere Whether you are running around a track, jogging along a track, or you take your jog somewhere else, if there are other runners, it is easy to get discouraged, especially if some of them are regularly lapping you. While the woman who always seems to pass you at least three times when you run around the local park has great endurance and speed right now, at one point, she was also a beginning runner too. Be careful about comparing yourself to other runners, particularly those who have years of experience on you. Instead of getting discouraged by those who are faster than you, use them as motivation.

Set realistic goals for your runs. In the beginning, it might be jogging for thirty seconds or a minute and walking for two or three minutes. Then slowly build on that. It is better to run a little less in the beginning and find that you can go a little faster or longer than to push yourself too hard and get injured. An injury may result in you either being forced to reduce your pace or having to take a break from running for several days or even weeks. Of course, part of pacing yourself is making sure you do add rest days into your running routine. Even competitive runners take rest days, do cross training some days, or at least reduce the number of miles they run on specific days.
