Exercise: Say the Words.
This one is self-explanatory, yet every time I have this conversation with parents they acknowledge that it’s also something they forget to do on a regular basis.
Say the words “I am proud of you” to your child. Don’t assume they know. Don’t assume it just goes unspoken. I can tell you that 100% of the teenage boys I have dealt with have responded to simple and direct praise. It validates their behavior, and encourages them to continue on a given path.
Teens want approval, they are trying to find themselves, and hearing those specific words will bring a sense of pride, love, and accomplishment, to their lives, inspiring them to continue on.
When a good grade comes in, tell them how proud you are.
