The first reason I disagree with participation trophies is because we can’t reward kids who don’t embody what the sport is about. As I was saying before, it would be ideal that every kid played a sport just for the love of the game, it’s not that way. Some kids are motivated by receiving awards. If everyone gets a trophy they don’t mean as much so the kids who are trying their best and deserve acknowledgement feel discouraged. It undermines the extra efforts of the players who are showing up, working hard, and doing what they are supposed to. The fact of the matter is you’re going to be compared to people around you your entire life. Teaching them that they all deserve the same reward for different effort is unrealistic. If someone excels at a job they will get promoted. Life is about competition and if we don’t teach kids that from a young age they are going to be shell shocked when they go out in the real world.
