A marching band is a group of instrumental musicians who typically perform outdoors and combine marching or other movements with a musical performance. Instrumentation typically includes brass, woodwinds, and percussion with the addition of the flag, rifle, and sabre units into "auxiliaries". These individuals march with the band and provide visual flair by spinning and tossing flags or mock weapons. These elements combined help to interpret the music that the marching band or drum and bugle corps is playing via their synchronized work.

Military bands are historically the first marching band to have been created. The instrumentation varies but generally contains brass, percussion, and woodwinds. Military marching bands march forward only in straight lines, rarely making curves. Music is played at a constant tempo of 120 BPM to provide a steady beat for military units to march at.
