Vince Lombardi, head coach of the Green Bay Packers during the 1960’s, stated, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence”. This holds true for many aspects of life, whether it be writing an essay for an English class, maintaining an image in society, or progressing a career, quality of life is a constant struggle. As humans, we are constantly evolving and making changes, most of them to supplement society. The need to be strive for greatness is thrumming vibrantly, deep inside the chest. There are some that achieve more than others, labelling themselves as leaders, more prominent members of society, individuals of inspiration for others to look up to. Two certain people who have demonstrated excellence by going above and beyond medial, mediocre measures, showcasing greatness throughout everyday situations, and are well-deserving of a blue ribbon, are Keaton Shumard and Aaron Jones.
Out of my two blue ribbons to give, the first ribbon I would give to my high school role model, Keaton Shumard. Even fresh out of high school, Keaton had an outstanding amount of accomplishments in musical talent and dedication, as well as educational

Time after time, they proved themselves through their personalities and moral principles. Both of them showed determination, whether it be in academics or musical talents, and integrity to the core. People would be wise to have the privilege to have similar role models as me. Because of them, I try to show greatness as those two have in their short time in high school, and strive to carry traits and qualities I have observed from them into my adult life as well. Vince Lombardi’s quote holds true to this blue ribbon project. Keaton and Aaron knew that perfection is ultimately unattainable, but still, they had a goal. They chased perfection and became

Leadership is defined as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. In my opinion, leadership is one of the most desirable qualities that a person can possess. No matter the environment, leaders are needed in every aspect of life. Children need leaders to help them develop, students need leaders to help them learn, and teams need leaders to help the group achieve a common goal. But the real question emerges, how does one become a leader? Are leaders born, or do they rise to the occasion? How do leaders get their peers to rally around their actions? Former National Football League linebacker Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens epitomizes what a leader should be on the field. Lewis was a linebacker for 17 seasons (1996-2012) for the Baltimore Ravens, and the early 2000’s Ravens defense is considered one of the greatest units in sports history. However, while Ray Lewis was viewed as one of the best on the field leaders in NFL history, however his legacy, reputation, and image were tainted by actions away from the playing field.. How is it that a figure like Ray Lewis could be so revered on the field, but off the field he was heavily criticized for his actions and behavior? Throughout this essay I will analyze Ray Lewis’ upbringing and discuss how he developed his leadership qualities that caused former teammate Jamal Lewis to say, “In recent history, I can’t really think of a player who has been as valuable to a team as Ray Lewis has been. He’s a different player, as far as his physicality, his passion off the field, his work ethic, and at the same time he can lead vocally. You don’t have all of that in one player, and I think that’s what makes him a Hall of Famer and probably the best linebacker to ever play the game.” (Belmont 41). I will draw on Lewis’ leadership qualities and compare and contrast them to figures we studied throughout the semester…

It was just another lazy Tuesday during the scorching Arizona summer for me when I heard the most influential quote I had ever perceived. My family and I were watching the Popular show: America’s got Talent. Then it happened, A comedian with a stutter was giving his pre-audition spheel and how terribly difficult his life had become. Before he was done, the man by the name of Drew Lynch said at the end of his speech, “I believe that anyone is able to turn any negative into a positive”. This perked my ears up and really made me step back and take an indisputable look into my life. I had been very recently going through a challenging point in my life on whether or not to hang up the towel on playing baseball as I had not been able to make the…

    Success vs Excellence

    • 394 Words

In our present day, I would argue that most people settle for success over excellence. Success being the type of car they drive, the designer brands of clothes they wear, the type of house or neighborhood they live in, by their occupation, how much money they make or have in their bank account. Some even base it on the number of letters that appear at the end of their name. James Henslin (2010) in his book Sociology: A Down to Earth Approach, credits the Sociologist Max Weber for saying “Social class has three components property, power and prestige” (p. 238). Media, our environment and peers push these components upon us on a daily basis. Phrases like “he made it”, “I have to keep up with the Joneses” or “living the American dream” are a few that come to mind, that show how wealth is equated with success. According to Jon Johnston (1996) in his book Christian Excellence-Alternative to Success, he states “Success bases our worth on a comparison to others and Excellence gauges our value by measuring us against our own potential” (p. 32). This paper examines how Johnston distinguishes success from excellence and how these concepts apply to my life.…

Review: Daniel Coyle. The Talent Code: Greatness isn’t born, it’s grown. Here’s how. Issue.com: Rabberson Docs (Extract from Chapter 1 – The Sweet Spot) 50 years ago, schools, trainers, coaches etc, once carried an assumption, “Talents are born in those who are blessed with these gifts”. These Talents are scouted in prestigious schools where auditions are held to determine if they had the natural talent in their niche before they are enrolled into a particular institution. No doubt this process has seen many greats that succeeded in making human history, does that mean that not everyone can be great? Is it inevitable that only a handful of “lucky” ones will be able to achieve greatness? Daniel Coyle in his book The Talent Code: Greatness isn’t…
