Modern television provides us many over the top ways to look at nurses. Some of these TV nurses sell drugs, some sleep with every doctor around. The reality is much simpler. Nurses are leaders, and year after year are judged as the most honest and ethical profession (“American rate nurses highest”, 2014).
Leadership
All nurses are leaders, and are roll-models for those around us. An RN or an LVN can lead a new CNA, for example, by teaching them a skill. But it is the way a nurse leads, and also how they follow, that can teach anyone around them. Patients, other occupations, family can all be influenced just by how you are leading. RN. While any nurse, no matter their level of education, is both a leader and responsible for the quality care they give there are differences between my practice as an LVN and that which I anticipate as an RN. An LVN has roles supervised by an RN, and include assisting with patient assessments, medication administration, and communication with patients and families. As I transform from and LVN to an RN, I was of the same impression that most LVNs must have. I do an RN job without the pay and stature of an RN. Three weeks into my RN education I see how much the roles vary. Yes, many things are performed exactly the same from LVN to RN. But the addition of critical thinking makes me understand there are large differences in the skills, responsibilities, and ethical responsibilities. As an LVN I have the “safety net” of an RN, but as an RN I am the safety net for others. I am the one evaluating one intervention over the other to provide the best care possible. I am a leader to many, and hope to foster a caring environment for the nurses under me. I will always remain a follower to many, for that is how we learn and develop our own ethics. And I will always strive to treat each and every patient like they were a beloved family
