In the modern age, minute-to-minute updates keep constituents in the know about every detail of their government and their doings. So if a leader is in a role that doesn’t align with their values and beliefs, it is almost impossible for them to perform flawlessly as people will highlight the gaps. Social media protests have single-handedly led to the collapse of some governments entirely. The nation doesn’t have a followership problem, but one can conceivably deduce a trust problem built on the institution of perception, public knowledge, and over sharing. Decapitating Twitter and cutting off its governmental data will only show the regrowth of angrier heads with a mutual outcry of totalitarianism and the end of times. However, governments must work to rebrand their message to one of trust, singing the songs of “We the People” and “We serve you.” Institutions must rebrand in the way a cereal box would.
