The second part of that line is where the forgiveness and hope comes in, they must be broken up and he hopes that she would forgive him and give him another chance and let him rebuild their relationship again. That is also why he said “I think I love you better now” (10), if he was not in a relationship with her before and did not love her then how could he love her any different now? He must have loved her at sometime before to compare his love for her now versus his love for her then. In their old relationship they loved each other but he probably did not show it or appreciate it enough; he then realized how much he loved her and how he did not appreciate her or treat her good enough, so he has changed his love for her for the better.
