Lending a Helping Hand
Hubert H. Humphrey once said, “The impersonal hand of government can never replace the helping hand of a neighbor." Community Service, what inspires people to contribute money, time or services unconditionally to a cause regardless of the potential risk they may be exposed to? Whether or not a person desires to cultivate within a community, perform civil service or simply to occupy spare time, volunteering offers a means to fulfil one's needs while helping others.
People volunteer for a variety of reasons, sometimes based out of guilt, sometimes based on family values or religious beliefs, but always for a reason. For many, it is a way of giving back to the community, for example after a natural disaster some people volunteer money out of guilt for the less fortunate while others offer time or services in an effort to work towards the common goal of revitalizing the community. Others may volunteer at local nursing home, or hospital as an opportunity to offer companionship, or encouragement to patients recovering from an illness. Parents often devote time to coach the local community football or baseball league in an effort to promote competitiveness and team building skills for children of the community. Volunteer firefighters potentially risk their life in an effort to make the community safer or to fulfil a family tradition.
Other People are simply motivated to occupy spare time, for example, elderly people look forward to achieving the retirement milestone, yet once reaching the golden age volunteering is often a means to keep active and involved within the community. According to a study by Justin Davis Smith and Pat Gray “For some older people, volunteering offers a 'structured' means of making a meaningful contribution in society once the opportunity to do so through work has been cut off."
