Long-term assignments gives the student a chance to work on other classes homework and have time to do their afterschool activities. My fourth block class gives the students a full week before the assignment is due. It is an online communications class and the students are required to post an article weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, after they have published their article, the students get the rest of the week to work on other assignments or get a head start on their article. Students need time to relax and not have to worry all the time on homework. Furthermore, being engaged in learning, gets the brain more active. For a student to be engaged in a subject, it gets the student more aware of the lesson and open to learn the material. Students find it more enjoyable to be active in a class where they can work with their peers. When someone constantly works on a project, they tend to learn the material a whole lot faster and it becomes more easier for the student to think back on the concept. When I was in science class, we was required to have a presentation ready to present for the class on a certain topic we learned throughout the lesson. We had the option to do a presentation or a poster board of pictures describing what they meant. Doing this made me understand the material a lot better than reading a book about molecules. Moreover, long-term assignments gives the student to learn soft skills for college and the work force.
Long-term assignments teaches the student oral and written communication skills. For a student to get out in the world, they will have to understand that speaking with and in front of people is not an option. Long-term assignments teaches another soft skill which is time management. Students will be responsible for taking time out of their day to work on their project. Having to know these soft skills will help the student throughout their entire life.
In conclusion, I believe long-term assignments are better for the student because they get time to themselves. They have time for after school activities and a chance to hang out with their friends. Long-term assignments are stress free on the student, students tend to learn the material faster, and it teaches the student skills they will need to be more successful. The classes I am in now are similar to the long-term assignments because my third block class we get a week to do our homework. Not every student learns the same and taking a different approach on learning will help the students
more.
