Marita's Bargain Gladwell
Don’t we all want longer summer vacation? Well, research shows that in order to increase student success at Anaheim Schools we should have longer school days extending the time in subjects that are more important. For example in the story “Marita’s Bargain” Gladwell argues that we should not have long breaks since we do not live the same lifestyle as before and have more time in our hands to focus on school,“ what that extra time does is allow for a more relaxed atmosphere”(10). His research shows that kids scores drop after summer vacation especially on low-income students. Therefore Gladwell expresses that is it better for low-income students to stay in school as long as possible because without those long breaks it will keep the brain constantly

Over all public schools, there are only 4% that operate on a year round calendar. In that 4% there are 2 million students learning under a year round basis. Besides, year round schedules mitigate education loss from the previous school year. It also tarnishes the tradition of summer break, according to “Should You Give Up Summer Vacation?” by Laura Kelsey. Evidently the year round calendar is a prime solution to alter failing grades and help struggling students catch up. For instance, some students are overwhelmed with work and drama that occurs in school. With that in mind, year round schedules have more spread out recesses eradicating the overwhelming school environment. Simultaneously, year round calendars lessen memory loss between long breaks. Thus helping students retain and understand their curriculum. Lastly, studies show that American students are less proficient in academic topics.…

I still remember that dreadful night as if it were yesterday, the day my pride, my joy, my everything, my marigolds were destroyed. That morning when I woke up I just knew it was going to be a bad day. I woke up and started doing the thing I've always done, I was taking care of my beautiful marigolds. I was out there for about two hours when a rock came flying at one of my marigolds and beheaded it, “Who out there?” I searched through the bushes trying to find the children who are always trying to get at me. “You better git” I yelled. I looked for a couple more seconds before I cautiously went back to my marigolds, but before I even knew it another rock beheaded another one of my marigolds. Those kids didn't understand my reasoning for planting…

There is no conclusion associated with year-round schooling affecting students’ academic performance in a positive way. Various studies have been performed, but they all prove to offer opposing results which causes inconclusive data. A study done about the learning loss “shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer”(Primer).…

The students “A real plus not practical with a year-round schedule is students can use traditional summer breaks to gain work experience, to take specialized courses or remedial tutoring, to learn swimming, practice music, study the arts or just for family time and vacations, all of which shape a student's character.” (Jensen) Instead of extending the school year, educators should concentrate more on improving the quality of time now being spent in school.…

Frequent breaks in the school year allow students and teachers to recharge themselves, be more active in class, and have higher academic achievement. Students and teachers can get tired if they have ongoing class for ten months without a break big enough to recharge. Some of the illnesses that people could have fought off when they were fully rested could make them sick and make more people absent (edweek.org). Absences due to illnesses can be sustained by year round school because of the time to recharge and can raise their academic achievement by having more time in class than when they would usually be sick. Although summer vacation may be fun, having frequent breaks in the school year can help students retain their knowledge and have higher academic achievement (nea.org). Retaining knowledge because of shorter summer breaks…

Summer is a season where individuals can experience activities like camping, hiking, swimming, traveling, etc. However it’s difficult for students to come across these events if there is school all year long. With one month in the summer, there is close to nothing that can be accomplished. A mom of five says, “Growing pains and lessons are learned through summer jobs, programs and freedom with friends” (Butler 1). Kids are only kids till they turn 18. Adolescents need their own free time to explore beyond education since, “A child’s life is not just school” (1). In school, teachers always mention “the real world”, and teens today often apply for summer jobs. Taking their summer away will only take away their chance to experience this “real world” they occasionally talk about. When a student is constantly being blocked by school from experiencing hardships, freedom, independence, or responsibilities, they won’t get the chance to familiarize with the rest of the…

The three month summer vacation between school years that students have become so fond of, was originally created to allow students to help with the harvesting of that year’s crops. However, the harvest season no longer interferes with education as the massive increase of urbanization and various technological advances have eased the workload of farming families. As a result, there is now a major need to transition from a traditional school setup to a more effective system of education. As of now, more than 90% of America’s states have implemented at least one year round school system (Nat'l Ass'n, “Year-Round Schooling, Calendar Reform Statistics: Schools, Districts”). Year round schools, although they may decrease some the benefits that come with summer break,…

Summer breaks can cause “summer slide” which is the decline of academic skills and knowledge over a long vacation. This shows that going to year-round school won’t make you forget over a long vacation. This also shows that if you don’t forget over a long vacation that you can improve your academic skills since you don’t have long breaks. All in all year-round schooling can improve a student’s skills and knowledge.…

Many people believe that the best way for students to be taught nowadays is through year-round schooling. This idea would break off from the traditional way of having nine months of school and three months of summer. Instead, the school would have a certain number of days, which is then followed by a long break. This would last year round and there would be no big summer break. The length of the school portions and break portions would be determined by the school; some more common calendar setups include but are not limited to periods consisting of thirty days of school followed by fifteen days of break, sixty days of school with twenty days of break, or ninety days off school and thirty days of break. In larger schools, they could use the…
