McDonalds use a 360 degree appraisal system (Ward 1995) where all the information on performance and feedback is derived from a number of stakeholders within the company. The existence of an appraisal program indicates to an employee that the organisation is genuinely interested in their individual performance and development. This alone can have a positive influence on the individual’s sense of worth, commitment and belonging. McDonald 's introduces all new employees into the business through a welcome meeting, which they must attend. The welcome meeting gives an overview of the Company, including; Job role, Food, hygiene and safety training (HACCP), Policies and procedures, Administration, Benefits, Training and development. McDonald 's believes that the success of the restaurants and the company is achieved through the people it employs and therefore the appraisal system is a vital part of the running system of the company.
The floor staff make up the majority of staff at McDonalds. These staff are highly recognised and are encouraged to do well in their duties and in order to progress into a higher position at the company. Each member of staff is evaluated regularly on their performance by managers within the restaurant and awarded accordingly by their peers and even encouraged by fellow employees in a stable and awarding environment to excel in their line of work. Positions in the restaurant are constantly changing in order to give staff a variety of work in order to keep them interested and tuned in to the operations of the business.

Performance appraisal generally has a massive effect on the level of employee motivation and satisfaction, so therefore it will usually result in a higher level of productivity. In McDonalds, their performance appraisal system provides both employees and management with recognition for their work efforts and achievements.
