Middle School Teachers Should Have Less Homework
“Wonder what it’s like to have a peaceful life,” Ron sighed, as evening after evening they struggled through all the extra homework they were getting.” J.K. Rowling said. Just like J.K. Rowling said, kids should be able to enjoy their lives while they are young because they will not get this back. First, middle school teachers should give way less homework because it can cause depression and anxiety. Second, the amount of information children have to learn is increasing in complexity and the rate they are expected to learn is either remaining the same or decreasing. Finally, some teens may have increased problems at school due to skipped classes, lack of interest or motivation, poor concentration, and low mental health energy caused by the depression. …show more content…
Depression and anxiety comes from all the work the students have to do at school. Coming home with the same amount of work and class work piled on top if you did not finish in class can cause mental breakdowns or anxiety. This has come to many students telling themselves they cannot finish the work and that will lead to cheating and plagiarizing, or they know they will not do well so they decide to copy off the smarter persons work. Homework can also lead to kids not having the right kind of childhood because of how many hours they spend doing homework instead of playing outside and having a personal life. Homework in school is not needed and should be taken away because it is not beneficial for kids and their well being. “I do not know anybody who said, 'I love that teacher, he or she gave a really good homework set,' or 'Boy, that was the best class I ever took because those exams were awesome. That is not what people want to talk about. It is not what influences people in one profession or another. “ says Neil deGrasse Tyson. Kids want to come home and relax from the hard day, not do more

Some students don’t know what to do when the teacher assign their homework. They don’t know what to do because when the teachers assign them homework the night before to do, they spent all night doing it. Then the next day at school they are way too tired to process any work and lesson the teachers are teaching. They would just fall asleep and pay less attention. That causes the student to not know what to do and they just write down random answers. Then when they turn it in the teachers mark it wrong and give them a bad grade. Eventually with all these bad grades in their file it will bring their grades down a lot. This would just give more stress to the students and drain their energy. An average person should be getting about seven to eight hours of sleep a night not two or three…

Finally, homework is very demanding on kids. “In most U.S schools, homework has become more demanding and time-consuming (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 33-35). Studies have shown that most kids feel very stressed about schoolwork and homework. There is a lot of pressure to do well in school. The clock hits 7:30 and I just get home and haven’t been home all day. Then I realize that I have to do English homework, social studies, science and math. This has happened to me many times. The second reason we shouldn’t have homework is it is a major health issue for most kids. First off, you get less sleep because some teens have to stay up all night because they get home late and still have to do a lot of homework. Students in middle school need a lot of sleep because they have to wake up at 6:00. People say that kids from ages 10-18 need at least 8-9 hours of sleep and some teens only get 6-7 because there up so late doing homework. The second reason homework is a health issue is it gives kids a lot of stress because they have to do homework and don’t want to forget anything. This gives students more stress because they already have stress from tests, lessons and exams. The last reason why homework is a health issue is kids…

According to Mary Coleman a school guidance counselor at Lisbon Regional School, she has no preference on whether we should or shouldn't get rid of homework. She does believe that homework can impact a student in a negative way if they do not have good homes or environments. “Students and kids may be poor and homeless, living in extremely difficult conditions. We have students living in one bedroom apartments with six or more people. They don’t have a place to study. We have kids living in homes where they witness adults doing drugs or are witnessing domestic violence. Students living in such difficult situations cannot compete with students coming from homes where education is supported.” When asked about how many students she gets in her office complaining about the stress from homework she replied with “I think most students complain about homework. All kids hate homework but practicing academic skills is important. It is hard for those students who are living in poor conditions because they do not have the opportunity to practice and when they are behind it can lead to depression and anxiety.” How can we help students who are struggling with this…

A common phrase among young adults in secondary education is that there are three parts to high school life: social life, grades, and sleep. Pick two. Clifton Parker, on a study by education scholar Denise Pope, states “spending too much time on homework mean[s] students [are] ‘not meeting their developmental needs or cultivating other critical life skills,’” Students [are] more likely to drop activities, not see friends or family, and not pursue hobbies they enjoy.” To achieve grades that fulfill collegiate ambitions, students must spend all of the time they may spend with family or friends on the homework that earns them points. Teachers often assume that a student’s overall productivity is defined by the amount of work completed in a night. Many end up assigning at least an hour of homework to assure themselves that the kids are learning. Real life productivity is defined by advancement and development of character or leadership. Through that lens, completing busywork is not productive. Once students reach the real world, they are underprepared and underdeveloped to face day to day challenges. In an interview, Christine Gross-Loh quotes Krista Kuru, Finnish Education Chief, describing the reasoning against this approach. She states “Academics isn't all kids need. Kids need so much more. School should be where we teach the meaning of life; where kids learn they are needed; where they can learn community skills.…

How are they supposed to complete hours worth of homework, as well as complete other activities that they are committed to? And on top of that, the student is expected to have at least 8 hours of sleep per day. Homework is preventing students from leading an active lifestyle, which therefore is harmful to their bodies. According to Stats Canada, about 72% of parents found that homework was often a source of household stress (Survey of Canadian Attitudes toward Learning). That is due to the fact that students are put under great pressure from teachers and parents. Unnecessary assignments could raise the stress level of the student, which can potentially lower productivity and performance, rather than raise it. Distress, which is stress that continues without relief, can lead to symptoms such as headaches, migraines, and high blood…

Every high school student across the country has that constant struggle to maintain an accurate grade. It’s always in the back of their heads to keep up with homework assignments, or to study specific sections for a test. The amount of stress put on these students is equal to giving them an elephant to carry on their backs for the entire day. Whether the student failed a class or wants to take an advanced program for the next year, that’s already enough stress on them to pass and therefore they shouldn’t have to take summer classes.…
