Monotheistic Religions
Judaism is the oldest monotheistic religion that has lived to this day and is also one of the first monotheistic religions. Christianity was created to fix a “problem” that Jesus though Judaism had. Islam was a religion with more resemblance to Judaism then Christianity. Islam fixed a problem in Judaism that Muhammad thought was there. The three Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Islam, and Christianity are similar, for example in their praying procedures. But they have some major differences, including their founding and their opinions on heaven.
Jews, Muslims, and Christians have different names for their clergy, main house of worship, sacred text, and their main day of worship. While the main day of worship for Jews is Saturday. And the main
day of worship for Muslims is Friday. But the reason that these two days are the days of worship is because it was the day God rested. (Douglass P . 7 ) Christianity's name for the main religious leader is a Priest. A Priest does the same job as the Rabbi in the Synagogue and is similar to the Islamic Imam (Douglass p.9 ). All three religions have a main place they go to pray, for the Christians it's a Church, for Jews it's a Synagogue and for Muslims it's a Mosque.(Douglass p.4) The sacred texts for Jews is the Torah which the Christians call the Old Testament and is part of the Christian sacred text called the Bible, Islam has a different sacred text, but the ideas of the Islamic sacred text reflect the ideas of the Bible and Torah (Douglass p.4-5). which include that there is only one God and that sacrificing humans is bad.For the three Abrahamic religions a good afterlife means a heavenly paradise and a bad after life is burning in hell(Douglass p 7).God's role in salvation is the same in the Abrahamic religions and is to judge you at the end of your life(Douglass p 6). The similarities in the beliefs of these religions about the afterlife show that the three Abrahamic religions are more interconnected than at first glance.
One main difference about the three Abrahamic religions is their founding. Judaism was founded by Abraham in 2000 B.C.E. in Israel (Douglass p 1). Islam was started in 600 C.E. by Muhammad in Mecca (Douglass p 6-7). And Christianity was founded by Jesus in Galilee around 3 B.C.E. (Douglass p.5).But it is important to remember that their founding can not be similar because Judaism was necessary for the creation of the other two religions that's why the time between the creation of Judaism and Christianity is around 2000 years while the time between the creation of Islam and Christianity is only 600 years. It is also important to remember that Christianity and Islam both changed something about Judaism, but the three Abrahamic religions have the same main message. Christianity is a more open religion and welcomed members and new members don’t have to do any significant thing. Christianity also had loose rules on food. The main difference between Islam and Judaism is that Judaism is based on the unique historical event of a divine revelation experienced by the entire nation. Whereas Islam is based on the prophetic claims of a single individual who subsequently convinced others to follow his ways.
Hopefully this article made you realize The three Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Islam,and Christianity are more similar than different and it is very important to not stereotype one religion over another.And I personally hope that next time you see a Muslim you won’t be racist and realize that s/he is more similar to you then you think. And next time you see a Jew I anticipate that you will not stereotype them. And I desire that you will not stereotype a Christian. It’s everyone's job is to prevent stereotypes and give one another respect. Next time you hear a racist joke will you laugh with your friends or will you say that racism isn't funny ?
