My Job Shadowing Career

Job shadowing provides students with information and allows them to experience a career they might be interested in pursuing. For my job shadow, my mentor was Mrs. Ana Gonzalez in the Radiology department at Woodland Heights Hospital in Lufkin, Texas. I was able to learn about the work environment, the duties and skills needed to be successful in this career, and discover new things that I did not know about Radiology. With the help of my mentors, I was able to experience what I will be working with when I pursue this career.

The Radiology department was full of machines and computers, each having a different purpose. The computers helped the workers identify and gain information about the patients who need assistance. The job of a Radiologist is to use diagnostic tests to provide images of a body part and use it to diagnose the source of a problem or disease. Mrs. Gonzalez explained that each Radiologist can specialize in one or more diagnostic test such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and x-ray. She stated that the skills needed to be successful in this field are good communication, full attention on procedures, and physical strength. They had already attended 74 patients before I arrived in the afternoon to begin my job shadow. Since the workers have a lot of experience, it was easy for them to go through the list of patients quickly. It also surprised me that they had a portable x-ray, and it was the first time I got to see one. The x-ray was used for patients who cannot stand or leave their rooms due to problems they have. Being able to observe an x-ray being done in a patient's room was very interesting. The job shadow really taught me a lot about Radiology, and it gave me information that I did not know about the
