Remarkably, having never even rode a horse I was given the opportunity to work with an untrained one. Training my horse proved challenging, forcing me to find alternative methods to traditional training. I found many training methods to be ineffective and unethical. Discovering the natural horsemanship method proved to be a viable alternative. I learned to understand that horses are prey animals, they should not be punished for following their natural instincts. Therefore, I tailored my training technique to use no force. What a wonderful journey my experience has been growing and learning together with my equine …show more content…

Community service has become an integral part of my life since joining 4-H in the fifth grade.
Community services include annual volunteering for the Salvation Army, Jaxon’s Cure, FISH food bank, and the Tacoma Rescue Mission. I have also volunteered at nursing homes, cleaned up roads, yards, churches, volunteered at many 4-H events, and helped take inventory of a burned residence. Our 4-H club has been honored with the Kiwanis community service award and featured in the local newspaper multiple times. Through community service I have found fulfillment and appreciation for the strong role models in my life. My experiences have instilled lifelong dedication to bettering myself and helping others.

Their attitude must be calm, friendly and forgiving. A horse that tends to bite, pin their ears and kick probably aren’t the best choices to become a therapy horse. Horses who are injured, lame or cannot properly move will not be accepted since it is not fair to the horse and won’t be able to properly teach their riders. A therapy horse is also trained to not mind extra equipment (such as toys, balls, ropes, batons etc.) and large devices (like lifts that are used to allow a rider to safely mount). Horses that respond well to voice and leg commands are…

I have always cherished the value of service and its effects on communities. A school class that I take that promotes service is Student Senate. A requirement for that class is ten hours of community service per trimester, and I have been a part of this group since sophomore year. This class is all about improving our school and creating an enjoyable environment for our students to be in. An example of this would be when I helped decorate the halls during themed weeks such as Spirit Week and Winterfest along with my fellow classmates.…

Throughout my high school career, I have been given numerous opportunities to lead other students by example, work ethic, volunteerism, and school involvement. I believe that my greatest impact as a leader in high school has been through my participation in a Service Learning Class. This class gave me the chance to help and lead others by tutoring younger students in the middle school and elementary school. As a senior, I felt responsible for providing a voice for the class in ideas and decisions to help better our school. I worked with administrators, teachers, and class members to promote healthy habits of responsibility, school pride, respect, and service.…

Whether it be helping with school decorations, planting trees in the garden, or cleaning up garbage, doing service allows me to both aid my community and to know exactly how I am aiding it. It is for this reason that I enjoy community service. Often, I will sign up to help with small, individual community events. For example, a few weeks ago, I allocated six hours to help set up and operate various activities at the River Hill Community Health Fair. I am also a member of the American Red Cross, and frequently help blood donors at the Columbia Red Cross Blood Donor Center. Whether it be helping the community learn more about health, or helping facilitate blood donations to the needy, I know exactly how I help in community…

Here are some examples of my service to my community. During my 8th grade year in Elena Christian Jr. High School, both my classmates and I, we decided to do a beach cleanup. We chose the beach across from Water Gut. It was a wonderful experience because I was able to help out my community in a positive way. I volunteer and participate with the Junior Meteorology Club of Elena L. Christian Junior High School. I help with certain fundraisers such as; bake sales, car washes and collecting donations. I like to be there for people who are in need because it shows people that I am a caring and loving person. I also volunteered at the Agriculture Fair of 2010. I was helping out the Virgin Islands Police Department booth, assisting the police cadets, police officers, lieutenants and as well as the commissioner. In the past, I have participated in community service projects. It wasn’t until The Leadership and Professional Development (LPD) class in the fall of 2012 that I was introduced to the idea of service learning. This semester taught me the importance of reflecting on the community service that I performed and actually taking something away from the experience. This semester my team and I had the opportunity to participate in community service activities at The Village at Carver Family YMCA at 1600 Pryor Road. We had the pleasure of working with a wonderful and enthusiastic staff and mentoring some of the local youth. The youth that we mentored ranged from kindergarten to the 8th grade. It is my plan to give an outlook on my time spent and the experiences that I had while participating in the service-learning project.…

When I was eleven years old I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I had a hard time coping with the changes in my mood. Part of my healing process consisted of trying many different medications, therapies, and developing the desire to heal. During this time, friends I had for many years pushed me away, and although I felt alone and confused at times, I came out thriving. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder thought to be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that can result in extreme swings in mood—from manic highs to depressive lows. To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have experienced a high period (mania). Bipolar mania is described as an “extreme high,” or feeling unusually great. Most people with bipolar disorder when ill or when symptomatic experience more lows than highs. Unfortunately, the lows I experienced were so extreme that the friends I thought would be by my side through anything chose to follow other kids and use my disorder to bully me creating deeper depression. Initially, I felt stigmatized by my diagnosis. Most people I encountered either didn’t know what bipolar was or how to interact with someone suffering with the disorder. Teachers, peers, and family members had a hard time knowing what to say or how to act around me. I started to feel like I was no longer my own person but just one big disaster and my mood swings became even more extreme as a result. Eventually, I grew tired of feeling sorry for myself and began my quest for the right medication, vitamins, nutrition, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing. I found my inner strength and courage. I put my energy into school, new friendships and family and started…

I was able to complete over two hundred hours of community service in 4 years of high school. I have done several communities services such as volunteering summer camps, family markets, and providing tutoring for students at a local elementary. In the summer camp that I have volunteered, I have chosen to be a coach and teach children how to play soccer. I have learned a lot from my service because it has demonstrated me that I work well with others, especially children which made me realize that I wanted to pursue a career that involves them. Giving to the community is something that I enjoy doing.…
