Service Paper
For my service I went to Atlanta with my mentor and some others and fed the homeless. My mentor prepared sandwiches, chips and water the night before. Saturday morning after he picked us up we went to the Quiktrip and met a homeless man that was on a journey to a shelter in Atlanta. He told us he had come from Houston all the way to Georgia. Meeting him and hearing about his life made me appreciate life and be thankful for my family. On the way to Atlanta he told us about how he was in the army and his family had abandoned him, the stories were so sad but very eye opening.
We reached his destination, said a prayer for him and wished him the best of luck. After dropping him
off we drove to the underground, parked the car and walked around looking for homeless people to give food to. While looking for people to give our bags to we came across a family that was out there also helping and feeding the homeless. They were giving away clothes, sneakers, bibles and toothbrushes. Seeing others out there helping the homeless put a smile on my face and brightened my day. As the day progressed we came across more homeless and hungry people. At one point they bombarded us asking for food, to exchange chips or for extra water.
This service was very important to me and I will remember it for the rest of my life. Seeing them happy and smile put the biggest smile on my face. I do plan on going back out there again to give them food. It was a great experience!
