Service Paper
For my service I went to Atlanta with my mentor and some others and fed the homeless. My mentor prepared sandwiches, chips and water the night before. Saturday morning after he picked us up we went to the Quiktrip and met a homeless man that was on a journey to a shelter in Atlanta. He told us he had come from Houston all the way to Georgia. Meeting him and hearing about his life made me appreciate life and be thankful for my family. On the way to Atlanta he told us about how he was in the army and his family had abandoned him, the stories were so sad but very eye opening.
We reached his destination, said a prayer for him and wished him the best of luck. After dropping him

Have you had any volunteer experiences and, if so, what did you like about participating? Give at least one example of what you liked. I have volunteered with Canterbury United Methodist Church on a mission trip and the Birmingham Zoo. When I volunteered with Canterbury, we went on a mission trip to Asheville, North Carolina for a week during the summer. I had the opportunity to travel to another city, in a different state, to help those who are less fortunate and live in harsh conditions. Seeing the harsh conditions that some people live in was very eye-opening for me because it really made me realize how fortunate, not only I, but the rest of my community is. I loved helping the people in Asheville because I knew that it is something they…

I helped at the Edwardsville Food Pantry moving and organizing different types of canned or packaged meals. I went to the St. Mary’s auction and served meals and helped with the auction. Lastly I went to the Edwardsville library, and I helped set up crafts and helped the kids out while they did their craft I also helped do some other little things around there. The day I went to the Collinsville KC, I fulfilled the corporal work of feeding the hungry.…

In July 2015, the Department of Veterans Affairs published a story of a man named Michael who had spent the last 10 years living under a Los Angeles bridge. When the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Mental Health America (MHA) of Los Angeles offered assistance, Michael refused their help. Although he didn’t want to be homeless, like many homeless people Michael was ashamed of his status and appearance which made him “reluctant to offers of support” (Department of Veterans Affairs). MHA Outreach workers never gave up on him and continued to try to help him. Every week, the outreach workers visited Michael and eventually gained his trust. Although Michael begins to feel more comfortable with the outreach workers, he was not yet ready…

One of my most beloved volunteering experiences happened through a program that helps celebrate American Veterans, the program is named Corvettes for Vets. I have happily served my community through this event every year since my Freshman year. During this program I help to establish a clean and peaceful environment; I enjoy serving my community and I especially enjoy serving those who have fought to ensure the freedoms I enjoy daily.…

Last year, I went to Pinetree Preschool, where there is nothing but young children. That was an experience I enjoyed and found so valuable and opened my eyes to the potential and possibilities of children. This year, I chose the complete opposite of Pinetree and I volunteered at Primrose, a retirement home for people who suffer from alzheimer's or dementia. At Primrose, I saw a completely different side of human life. That may seem like an exaggeration but I tend not to spend much time with people much, much older than me, as they were at Primrose. I learned an incredible amount of patience and understanding and just life in general during my time volunteering at Primrose, that I could not had received anywhere else.…

    A Trip to San Antonio

“San Antonio sounds great.” Sarcastically I said. Having the whole week in San Antonio, with a cousin you just despised. I don’t despise her just because. I despised her, because she is leaving me, to go to Los Angeles. Without even saying a word that’s why I despised her. “I just know this vacation is going to be the worst.” I said…

As long as I can remember service to others was always encouraged by my family and teachers. For example, I helped teachers with the intent of lightening their load of work so they can be able to go home earlier. Things like this make me proud because I am able to help others, and to bring a smile to their faces. My excuse to avoid community service was that I always thought that school was all about homework and getting good grades to be on the top 20 of your class. Truth is I have always overlooked this people thinking they were being lazy for not working, but through this community service I learned that each and everyone around the world is fighting their own battles and we all deal with them the best way we can. I am proud of myself because I went to that community service and learned about this people who I had always stereotyped by their actions, community service has encouraged me to actively listen and learn from others, to walk alongside my neighborhood and to build new…

The service that I did with the poor was at St. Vincent De Paul. I took the bus with a friend after school on a random Thursday with Ms. Reuter driving the bus, which I didn’t expect her to know how to do at all. It was my first time working there, because I had only worked at the distribution center the year before for confirmation. When we arrived we all signed in and they put the people who had been there before in their normal locations. My friend and I got split up, with me in charge of sorting all of the donated canned foods and my friend went over to move pallets around. While I was working with one of the staff there, I made friends with some freshmen that were also working with me. They started calling me silly names like “broth boy” because at some point I got in charge of sorting canned broths.…

The summer of 2016, I organized a venturesome trip for my dad and I to share in the Florida Keys during the weekend of our birthdays. Our trip was scheduled for the end of July, which happened to be the hottest and the most chaotic time to go because of lobster season. As a Floridian, I have traveled to many destinations throughout Florida; but never before have I gone as far south as the keys. Recalling the first time I visited the Florida Keys is one of my fondest memories.…

When I started to look for colleges during high school, I took an unconventional approach towards finding the university that I wanted to attend. My first visit to New Orleans was by accident after my parents canceled our summer trip to Santa Fe because they did not think the food there was good enough. They asked if New Orleans was a better alternative and I jumped at the idea of being in a city that supposedly is rich in ghost . After my first trip, I fell in love with the people, atmosphere, and most importantly the city. The next three years, my family and I came to New Orleans any chance we had, during spring break, winter vacation, and the summer. New Orleans became a place where my imagination was replenished after spending my whole life in Houston. The way I connected to New Orleans was through the distinct architecture and historical presence that I felt through my everyday experiences in the city.…

I believe that a situation in which I best demonstrated the quality of service was when I organized and arranged a group of people to prepare meals at Meals from the Heartland last year. As part of my confirmation process, I needed to organize and carry out an event that displayed leadership. Other kids in my church put on food drives or organized a walk for a cause. I decided to arrange a group of people from my church, school, and family to prepare meals for 2 hours down at Meals from the Heartland. Meals from the Heartland is a non-profit organization made up of volunteers from businesses, schools, churches, and community organizations who package meals that get delivered to malnourished people in Iowa, in the United States, and around…

The first was the comfort I offered to a 1 year old little girl who was unable to stop crying. The second was previously mentioned about how I could encourage the boys that they had the potential to succeed. The benefits I have gained from this service learning experience have been extremely beneficial to me as a freshmen in college. One of the things I learned from this is that many people need all sorts of different resources so that they can live day to day, along with that no matter how bad I think my day may be sometimes or how bad of a life I have that I really am not that bad off. I am forever grateful for the opportunity I was involved…
