Nostra Aetate Analysis
“Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble”. (1 Peter 3:8). The main idea of Nostra Aetate is to foster unity between individuals and nations and encourage dialogues between Christians and non-Christians. Regardless of anyone’s religious views, it is important that we understand and practice what is taught in Nostra Aetate because discrimination and prejudice have become the greatest issue in society. We live in a world with so many differences and such diversity, why don't people accept and understand that? In Collen Curry’s article Christians and Muslims Face More Persecution by Hindu Extremists in India, Groups Say, she discusses how Hindus were killing and persecuting Christians because of their beliefs and losing their only sources of food. Not only is this wrong on so many different levels, it is violating a basic human right. After Christianity, Muslims are another religious group that has been a target of religious discrimination. I feel as though today Muslim’s face the most because with Trump’s presidency, religious discrimination has only become a bigger issue than it already is. On Friday, January 27th, Trump signed an executive order that would “keep refugees from entering the country for 120 days and immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim nations out for three months. The countries affected are Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia” (Criss 2017). His opinions and actions have caused American Muslims to feel unsafe and disrespected. Labeling an entire religion as “terrorists” is not okay because religion does not determine your worth. Religious discrimination has a worldwide effect and needs to be addressed. I personally do not feel as though enough is being done to protect people against discrimination because we live in a society that promotes hate and promotes the idea of being closed
